    , Article Solid State Communications ; Volume 128, Issue 6-7 , 2003 , Pages 239-244 ; 00381098 (ISSN) Moshfegh, A. Z ; Hashemifar, S. J ; Akhavan, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
The growth of a CoSi2 thin film has been studied for the Co/W/Si(100) system. The Co film with a thickness of about 30 nm was grown over 12 nm sputtered W interlayer using the evaporation technique. The deposited multilayer structure was annealed in an N2 (80%)+H2 (20%) environment in a temperature range from 400 to 1000 °C for 60 min. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), four point probe sheet resistance (RS) measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Using the deposited Co/Si(100) system as a reference point, a CoSi2 layer was formed at 800 °C with undesirable crystalline structure and the RS value of about 1.6Ω/□. Instead, for the Co/W/Si(100) system, it has...

Ion transport through graphene oxide fibers as promising candidate for bblue energy harvesting

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 165 , 2020 , Pages 267-274 Ghanbari, H ; Esfandiar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Nanostructured graphene based membranes demonstrated excellent capabilities in various applications in nanofiltration and energy conversion due to unique atomically smooth surfaces and adjustable pore size or interlayers spacing at Angstrom scales. There are some reports on the osmotic power generation using physical confinements and electrostatic interactions between ions and GO membranes. However, the results indicated insufficient power densities (˂1 W/m2) can be achieved because of swelling of interlayer spacing of the GO membranes upon exposure to aqueous solutions which results in reducing the influence of confinement on ionic motilities. Here, the GO fibers is presented as one...

    Abstract
In this paper, an advanced integrated pixel-level method based on the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) approach named DeepLabv3+ is proposed for weak interlayers detection and quantification. Furthermore, a database containing 32,040 images of limestone, dolomite, loess clay, and red clay is established to verify this method. The proposed model is then trained, validated, and tested via feeding multiple weak interlayers. Moreover, robustness and adaptability of the proposed model are evaluated, and the weak interlayers are extracted. Compared with the fully convolutional network (FCN)-based method and traditional image techniques, the proposed model provides higher accuracy in terms...

    Abstract
A new study is conducted with the aid of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate the effect of shear modulus value of the interlayer van der Waals (vdWs) interactions on free vibration of cantilever multi-layer graphene nanoribbons (MLGNRs). The corresponding calibrated nonlocal parameters of the nonlocal model are obtained accordingly. The vdWs interactions are treated as the cores between every two adjacent graphene layers and their equivalent shear modulus is calculated using MD simulation. The obtained resonant frequencies via the nonlocal sandwich model are compared to the MD simulation results to calibrate the nonlocal parameter. Results reveal a strong conclusion that the...

The Effect of Interlayer Composition on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Transient Liquid Phase Bonded Dual Phase Steels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azqadan, Erfan (Author) ; Ekrami, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Interlayer composition as one of the most important factors of TLP bonding could affect bonding region composition and microstructure that both of them govern the mechanical properties of the joint. Due to the risk of substrate microstructure degradation , welding of dual phase steel needs more cautions. TLP bonding ideally acquires joints having more similar microstructure to substrate. Moreover , using this method could avoid the change of base metal microstructure when heat treatment of carbon steel is postponed until after bonding. Fe-based , Ni-based and commercially pure Cu are three different composition has been studied in this work. The bonded samples were investigated by optic and...

    Abstract
This paper aims at addressing the microstructure-strength characteristics relationship during transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of cast IN718 nickel based superalloy using Ni-7. Cr-4.5. Si-3. Fe-3.2. B (wt%) amorphous interlayer. The progress of the isothermal solidification at different temperatures for different times is analyzed using a Larson-Miller parameter (LMP). It was found that there is direct relationship between isothermal solidification zone (ISZ) size and LMP. Results showed that in situation where isothermal solidification has not been completed, the ratio of athermal solidification zone (ASZ) size to the width of the total solidified zone is the controlling factor for...

    Abstract
Redistribution of alloying elements in the transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding zone of IN738LC/ BNi-3/IN738LC was studied to investigate microstructural evolution in this area. Wavelength dispersive spectrometry and electron probe microanalysis revealed that, during non-isothermal solidification in the TLP bonding zone, enrichment of residual liquid phase with the positive segregating elements caused formation of intermetallic in the bonding zone. Scanning electron microscopy observation Indicated that the redistribution of alloying elements, between TLP bonding zone and base alloy, resulted In formation of a γ′ boundary layer, containing high density of fine γ′, around the bonding zone....

Structure transition of single-texture CoSi 2 nanolayer grown by refractory-interlayer-mediated epitaxy method

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 253, Issue 5 , 2006 , Pages 2953-2957 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2006
    Abstract
In this investigation, the crystalline structure of a nanometric CoSi 2 layer, formed in heat treated Co/W x Ta (1-x) /Si(1 0 0) systems, has been studied by XRD analysis. Careful measurements of the diffraction intensities revealed that temporary formation of a metastable diamond cubic structure of CoSi 2 phase, rather than its usual CaF 2 structure, was occurred. It has been shown that formation of this metastable structure depends on the kind of the applied interlayer in addition to the annealing temperature. Among the studied systems with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1, the second and the last systems resulted in growing a (1 0 0) single-texture CoSi 2 layer with the preferred usual CaF 2...

To evaluate thermal stability of the systems, heat-treatment was performed from 300 to 900 °C in an N 2 ambient for 30 min. All the samples were analyzed by four-point-probe sheet resistance measurement (R s ), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Based on our data analysis, no interdiffiusion, phase formation, and R s variation was observed up to 500 °C in which the Ag layer showed a (1 1 1) preferred crystallographic...

Properties of charge and magnetic impurities in a spin-polarized electron gas: A semiclassical approach

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , 2005 , Pages 313-322 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Shokri, A. A ; Esfarjani, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Analytical studies on the effect of charge and magnetic impurities in a spin-polarized electron gas (SPEG) are carried out using a Thomas-Fermi semiclassical approximation (TFSA). The susceptibility matrix of an SPEG is calculated within the TFSA framework. Charge, spin and mixed charge-spin screening lengths are defined and calculated for the bulk metals (Fe, Co and Ni). It is found that these screening lengths do not strongly depend on temperature in metallic samples. Based on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) model, the magnetic response function is then used to calculate the dependence of the exchange coupling between two ferromagnetic layers. It is seen that the exchange...

Transient liquid phase bonding of dual phase steels using Fe-based, Ni-based, and pure Cu interlayers

    , Article Journal of Manufacturing Processes ; Volume 30 , 2017 , Pages 106-115 ; 15266125 (ISSN) Azqadan, E ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding is a joining process which combines benefits of diffusion bonding and brazing. Therefore, this method has widely been used in joining of materials which are sensitive to fusion welding. Interlayer composition, as one of the most important factors of TLP bonding, can affect the bonding region composition, microstructure, and hence mechanical properties of the joint. In this research, Fe-based, Ni-based, and commercially pure Cu interlayers are used to bond low-carbon steel components which are then heat treated to produce dual phase steel. The present work focuses on two main goals. Firstly, drawing a comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties...

A novel model for analysis of multilayer graphene sheets taking into account the interlayer shear effect

    , Article Meccanica ; Volume 53, Issue 11-12 , 2018 , Pages 3061-3082 ; 00256455 (ISSN) Nikfar, M ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, a multiplate shear model is developed for dynamic analysis of multilayer graphene sheets with arbitrary shapes considering the interlayer shear effect. By utilizing the model, then some free-vibration analysis is presented. According to the experimental results, the weak interlayer van der Waals interaction cannot maintain the integrity of carbon atoms in adjacent layers. Therefore, it is required that the interlayer shear effect is accounted to study multilayer graphene mechanical behavior. The governing differential equation of motion is derived for the multilayer graphene sheets utilizing a variational approach based on the Kirchhoff plate model. The essential and natural...
