Effect of initial surface treatment on shot peening residual stress field: analytical approach with experimental verification

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 137 , 2018 , Pages 171-181 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Sherafatnia, K ; Farrahi, G. H ; Mahmoudi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Shot peening is the most common surface treatment employed to enhance the fatigue performance of structural metallic materials and often carried out after other surface treatments. This paper mainly focuses on the effects of initial conditions of surface such as initial stress filed and hardness profile on shot peening residual stress field. The residual stress distribution induced by shot peening is obtained using Hertzian contact theory and elastic–plastic evaluation after yielding occurred during impingement and rebound of shots. Elastic plastic calculations are performed using different hardening models considering Bauschinger effect. The present model is able to predict redistribution...

Optimal design of the high-speed spindle bearings to minimize the non-repeatable runout

    , Article SAE World Congress Experience, WCX 2019, 9 April 2019 through 11 April 2019 ; Volume 2019-April, Issue April , 2019 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Farahani, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The production with high-quality at the lowest production time can be a key means to success in the competitive environment of the manufacturing companies. Therefore, in recent years, the need for the extra precise and high-speed machine tools has been impressively increased in the manufacturing applications. One of the main sources of errors in the motion of the high-speed spindles is the occurrence of non-repetitive runouts (NRRO) in the bearing. The NRRO can be caused by some factors such as the form of balls, the waveness of rings, the number of balls, and the permutation of one or two balls in the ball bearing. In this paper, a Taguchi-based approach is proposed for the optimal design...

Nonlinear vibration of rectangular atomic force microscope cantilevers by considering the Hertzian contact theory

    , Article Canadian Journal of Physics ; Volume 88, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 333-348 ; 00084204 (ISSN) Sadeghi, A ; Zohoor, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The nonlinear flexural vibration for a rectangular atomic force microscope cantilever is investigated by using Timoshenko beam theory. In this paper, the normal and tangential tip-sample interaction forces are found from a Hertzian contact model and the effects of the contact position, normal and lateral contact stiffness, tip height, thickness of the beam, and the angle between the cantilever and the sample surface on the nonlinear frequency to linear frequency ratio are studied. The differential quadrature method is employed to solve the nonlinear differential equations of motion. The results show that softening behavior is seen for most cases and by increasing the normal contact...

Analytical approach to dynamic and vibration analysis of a spherical ball under contact stress

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1306-1312 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Aram, A ; Hosseinzadeh, A ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a nonlinear model to illustrate the effect of contact stress in the vibration behavior of mechanical components, especially rotating systems. The problem is considered in the case of the vertical vibration of a sphere on a plate. The Hertzian contact theory is used to obtain the relationship between contact force and the deflection of the mass center of the sphere. Modeling the system by a mass and a nonlinear spring, the vibration equation of the mass center of the sphere is derived. The method of LindstedtPoincar is implemented to solve the equation of motion, and obtain vibration characteristics under a compressive preload. The dependency of frequency on several...
