    Abstract
The electrical bending instability in charged liquid jets is the phenomenon determining the process of electrospinning. A model of this phenomenon is lacking however, mostly due to the complicated interplay between the viscosity and elasticity of the solution. To investigate the bending instability, we performed electrospinning experiments with a solution of polyethylene oxide in water/ethanol. Using a fast camera and sensitive multimeter, we deduced an experimental dispersion relation describing the helix pitch length as a function of surface charge. To understand this relation, we developed a theoretical model for the instability for a wide range of visco-elastic materials, from conducting...

Investigating reliable conditions for hewl as an amyloid model in computational studies and drug interactions

    Abstract
A number of conformational diseases in humans have been associated with protein/peptide fibrillation known as amyloid. Although extensive studies have been conducted in understanding the molecular basis of amyloid formation, a detailed mechanism is still missing. Experimentally, HEWL (hen egg white lysozyme) has been exploited ubiquitously as a model protein for amyloid fibrillation and drug inhibition. However, computational studies investigating fibril formation of HEWL have been a difficult task to perform mainly due to high stability of lysozymes and the absence of crystal structures of HEWL fibril oligomers. In this study, we have examined various conditions of HEWL amyloid formation...

Molecular dynamics study on axial elastic modulus of carbon nanoropes

    Abstract
Carbon nanoropes (CNRs) are of interest for a wide variety of nanotechnological applications. Since little attention has been paid to mechanical properties of CNRs, their axial elastic modulus is explored herein. Molecular dynamics (MDs) simulations are adopted for analysis of Young's modulus of CNRs. It is also shown that increase in the initial helical angle decreases Young's modulus; however, by increase in the number of CNTs and strands, different influence on Young's modulus emerges. Therefore, the highest value of Young's modulus obtained at the lower value of initial helical angle and consequently, Young's modulus of bundle of straight CNTs is higher than CNRs with hierarchical...

Creation of twisted terahertz waves carrying orbital angular momentum via a plasma vortex

    Abstract
In this paper a new method for generating twisted terahertz radiation is proposed. The generation of twisted terahertz radiation in a plasma vortex, where the plasma density profile has helical structure, is investigated. The method is described on the basis of angular momentum exchange between plasma vortex and laser beam. The interaction of the vortex plasma and photons causes the laser angular momentum to change. Twisted terahertz radiation is produced at the beat frequency of laser and electron plasma waves. In this process, for Gaussian laser modes, the angular momentum of terahertz wave derives from the plasma vortex, while for the Laguerre-Gaussian it originates in the difference in...

Evaluating the multifunctionality of a new modulator of zinc-induced Aβ aggregation using a novel computational approach

    Abstract
The high concentration of zinc metal ions in Aβ aggregations is one of the most cited hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and several substantial pieces of evidence emphasize the key role of zinc metal ions in the pathogenesis of AD. In this study, while designing a multifunctional peptide for simultaneous targeting Aβ aggregation and chelating the zinc metal ion, a novel and comprehensive approach is introduced for evaluating the multifunctionality of a multifunctional drugs based on computational methods. The multifunctional peptide consists of inhibitor and chelator domains, which are included in the C-terminal hydrophobic region of Aβ, and the first four amino acids of human albumin....
