    Abstract
    The ability and how to use a microwave life-detection system to search for the humans buried under earthquake rubble or laid behind various barriers has been investigated. Based on the behavior of a human under multiple layers of barriers and the detection capability of the microwave tools a system has been proposed. This system operating at 1150 MHz can remotely detect the movement of the heart of the trapped alive people. The operation principle is based on detection of the Doppler frequency shift of the electromagnetic wave reflected from the periodic moving part of a living human body such as the heart.     Abstract
    In this paper we introduce two methods for measuring irregularities in human heartbeat time series (HHTS). First we consider the multi-fractal structure of HHTS to distinguish healthy individuals and from those with congestive heart failure. In this way we modify the Extended Self-Similarity (ESS) method and apply it to HHTS. Our second approach is based on the recursive method, which we use to predict the duration of the next heartbeat by considering a few previous ones. We use standard physiological data and show that these approaches lead to very satisfactory methods to resolve the healthy and CHF individuals.     Abstract
    We describe a method for analyzing the stochasticity in non-stationary data for the beat-to-beat fluctuations in the heart rates of healthy subjects, as well as those with congestive heart failure. The method analyzes the return time series of the data as a Markov process, and computes the Markov time scale, i.e., the time scale over which the data are a Markov process. We also construct an effective stochastic continuum equation for the return series. We show that the drift and diffusion coefficients, as well as the amplitude of the return time series for healthy subjects are distinct from those with CHF.     A bilateral impedance controller is presented to enable robot-assisted surgery of a beating heart. For this purpose, two desired impedance models are designed and realized for the master and slave robots interacting with the operator (surgeon) and the environment (heart tissue), respectively.     Abstract
    Background: Accurate tracking of the heart surface motion is a major requirement for robot assisted beating heart surgery. Method: The feasibility of a stereo infrared tracking system for measuring the free beating heart motion was investigated by experiments on a heart motion simulator, as well as model surgery on a dog. Results: Simulator experiments revealed a high tracking accuracy (81 μm root mean square error) when the capturing times were synchronized and the tracker pointed at the target from a 100 cm distance.
