    Abstract
In tissue engineering, the development of a tissue essentially depends on supply of an adequate amount of nutrients and the design of a proper biophysical micro-environment for cells. The limitation of the available initial number of cells, expensive substances and time consuming experiments are the main bottlenecks in this type of processes. In this regard, mathematical modelling and computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD) are powerful tools to identify an efficient and optimized design by providing reliable insights of the process. This study presents a mathematical model and CFD simulation of cartilage cell culture under a perfusion flow, which allows not only to characterize the...

    Abstract
Due to the sensitivity of mammalian cell cultures, understanding the influence of operating conditions during a tissue generation procedure is crucial. In this regard, a detailed study of scaffold based cell culture under a perfusion flow is presented with the aid of mathematical modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). With respect to the complexity of the case study, this work focuses solely on the effect of nutrient and metabolite concentrations, and the possible influence of fluid-induced shear stress on a targeted cell (cartilage) culture. The simulation set up gives the possibility of predicting the cell culture behavior under various operating conditions and scaffold designs....

Plant Layout Problem by Considering Aisle Structure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sahraei, Pardis (Author) ; Eshghi, Kourosh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The layout problem is directly related to the material handling system; therefore, these two concepts are always being considered together. The main criterion for evaluating the layout in the objective function, is the cost of controlling and moving the materials. In order to calculate the material handling cost, it is necessary to provide an accurate information on the distance between departments, number of goods transported, and the cost of moving a unit of goods per unit of distance; therefore, accurate calculation of the distance between departments is an issue of paramount importance. In the literature, the distance between the departments is measured in three ways: Euclidean distance,...

Approximation Algorithms for Geometric Optimization on Sliding Windows

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehnamadi, Navid (Author) ; Zarrabi Zadeh, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we focus on a subset of geometric optimization problems (including k-center) in the Sliding Window model. The sliding window model is driven from the Data Stream model in which input points arrive one by one and the space is limited. The main diffrenece of these two models is that in the sliding window model we are interested in the N latest points not all of the arrived points. In this thesis, we study Minimum Enclosing Ball, 2-center, and Euclidean k-center in the Sliding Window model. We provide a (1 + ")-approximation algorithm for MEB in d-dimensions. To our knowledge there is no algorithm for MEB in d-dimensions where d >2. We also provide a (1 + ")-approximation...

Numerical Modeling of Deep Geothermal Energy Reservoirs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi Hosseini, Adel (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Geothermal energy is one of the most important sources of energy that is increasingly becoming more popular all over the world. In this study, the performance of deep geothermal energy as a form of geothermal energy was evaluated using a numerical modeling approach. To do so, first, the thermo-hydraulic behavior of geothermal reservoirs was studied to help achieve the most efficient arrangement for production and injection wells. The results show that to optimize production and injection wells, there are two factors to consider. Firstly, the distance between production and injection wells must be high. Secondly, the production wells must be uniformly distributed throughout the reservoir so...

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) Volume 8287 LNCS, 2013, Pages 351-360 ; Volume 8287 , 2013 , Pages 351-360 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 9783319037790 (ISBN) Ahadi, A ; Mozafari, A ; Zarei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In the Touring Polygons Problem (TPP) there is a start point s, a sequence of simple polygons P = (P1,...,Pk) and a target point t in the plane. The goal is to obtain a path of minimum possible length that starts from s, visits in order each of the polygons in P and ends at t. This problem has a polynomial time algorithm when the polygons in P are convex and is NP-hard in general case. But, it has been open whether the problem is NP-hard when the polygons are pairwise disjoint. In this paper, we prove that TPP is also NP-hard when the polygons are pairwise disjoint in any Lp norm even if each polygon consists of at most two line segments. This result solves an open problem from STOC '03 and...

Design and parameter study of integrated microfluidic platform for CTC isolation and enquiry; a numerical approach

    , Article Biosensors ; Volume 8, Issue 2 , 18 June , 2018 ; 20796374 (ISSN) Shamloo, A ; Ahmad, S ; Momeni, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2018
    Abstract
Being the second cause of mortality across the globe, there is now a persistent effort to establish new cancer medication and therapies. Any accomplishment in treating cancers entails the existence of accurate identification systems empowering the early diagnosis. Recent studies indicate CTCs’ potential in cancer prognosis as well as therapy monitoring. The chief shortcoming with CTCs is that they are exceedingly rare cells in their clinically relevant concentration. Here, we simulated a microfluidic construct devised for immunomagnetic separation of the particles of interest from the background cells. This separation unit is integrated with a mixer subunit. The mixer is envisioned for...

Multi-objective Optimization of a Megawatt Wind Turbine Blade Geometry Using an Evolutionary Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahboubi Fouladi, Hossein (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Without optimization, it is impossible to reduce the cost of power generation from an efficient megawatt wind turbine. In this work, we present a multi-objective algorithm to optimize the megawatt blade geometry. In this algorithm, the mass of blade and the wind turbine annual energy production (AEP) are considered as the objective functions. The design variables are blade chord, blade twist, airfoil thickness, spar geometry and blade curvature distribution. The constraints are maximum allowable strain for the chosen materials, maximum tip deflection and maximum tip speed. For the internal geometry, we consider two spars and four panels. The blade element momentum method (BEM) is used for...

Optimization of the New Structure of the Reluctance Motor to Increase the Efficiency and Power-Density by Experimental Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi Fesharaki, Alireza (Author) ; Sayyaadi, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Permanent magnets play an essential role in the structure of the electric motor, but due to limited resources, many efforts have been made to meet the need for them. One of the most important types of non-permanent electric motors is reluctance motors. Despite their antiquity in design, torque ripples have led to the limited use of reluctance motors, but advances in science have made it possible to control these ripples. As a result of the major advantages such as low manufacturing costs, high efficiency, and uncomplicated structure, these motors have been the subject of many researches. One way to eliminate the problem of torque ripples is to increase the number of teeth, but in the common...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mardani Boldaji, Fatemeh (Author) ; Taghipoor, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Hosseini, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Droplet microfluidic platform generates monodisperse droplets in a desired size through immiscible multiphase flows inside microchannels. Droplets are individual reactor and can be used for bio(chemical) analyses. Also, for materials fabrication, droplet microfluidics offers a versatile platform for generation of nano- or micro-sized particles and microcapsules that are widely used in drug delivery. In addition to the monodispersity, high-throughput generation is also necessary in many applications. Therefore, droplets must be formed in stable regimes (dripping and squeezing) in the highest possible frequency. In this study, the flow-focusing geometry, which is the most common geometry in...

    , Article Journal of Molecular Structure ; Vol. 1056-1057, issue. 1 , January , 2014 , p. 56-62 Ziyaei Halimehjani, A ; Shakourian-Fard, M ; Farvardin, M. V ; Raeesi, M ; Hashemi, M. M ; Behzadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An efficient method for synthesis of 2-iminium-1,3-dithiolane as a new family of ionic liquids with reaction of dithiocarbamates with methyl triflouromethanesulfonate was described. Theoretical study on the synthesized ionic liquids was also performed by quantum chemistry calculation. Geometry optimization on the ion pairs was carried out with the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. The interaction energies were calculated, and corrected by the basis set superposition error (BSSE) calculated by the counterpoise method. The results of natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses indicate that the interactions occur via hydrogen bonding between oxygen...

    Abstract
Three new chromophores based on the triphenylamine (MM, DM, DN) with various novel electron withdrawing anchoring groups have been synthesized for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The sensitizers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, Mass, UV–Vis, and electrochemical analysis. The HOMO and LUMO electron distributions of the sensitizers were calculated using density functional theory on a B3LYP level for geometry optimization. The DSSC device based on DM dye showed the best photovoltaic performance among MM and DN dyes: maximum monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 98 %, short circuit current (JSC) of 4.58 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (VOC) of...

Sample complexity of total variation minimization

    , Article IEEE Signal Processing Letters ; Volume 25, Issue 8 , 2018 , Pages 1151-1155 ; 10709908 (ISSN) Daei, S ; Haddadi, F ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This letter considers the use of total variation (TV) minimization in the recovery of a given gradient sparse vector from Gaussian linear measurements. It has been shown in recent studies that there exists a sharp phase transition behavior in TV minimization for the number of measurements necessary to recover the signal in asymptotic regimes. The phase-transition curve specifies the boundary of success and failure of TV minimization for large number of measurements. It is a challenging task to obtain a theoretical bound that reflects this curve. In this letter, we present a novel upper bound that suitably approximates this curve and is asymptotically sharp. Numerical results show that our...

Distribution-aware block-sparse recovery via convex optimization

    , Article IEEE Signal Processing Letters ; Volume 26, Issue 4 , 2019 , Pages 528-532 ; 10709908 (ISSN) Daei, S ; Haddadi, F ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We study the problem of reconstructing a block-sparse signal from compressively sampled measurements. In certain applications, in addition to the inherent block-sparse structure of the signal, some prior information about the block support, i.e., blocks containing non-zero elements, might be available. Although many block-sparse recovery algorithms have been investigated in the Bayesian framework, it is still unclear how to incorporate the information about the probability of occurrence into regularization-based block-sparse recovery in an optimal sense. In this letter, we bridge between these fields by the aid of a new concept in conic integral geometry. Specifically, we solve a weighted...

Optimal geometry analysis for tdoa-based localization under communication constraints

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 57, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 3096-3106 ; 00189251 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Behnia, F ; Amiri, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The sensor-source geometry has a significant effect on accuracy of source localization problems. In a sensor placement problem, one attempts to optimally place the sensors in the surveillance area so as to optimize a performance criterion. Sensor placement methods mainly solve the associated problems without taking any specific constraint on permissible location of sensors into account. In practical applications, however, possible location for deployment of the sensors are subject to such limitations as environmental, industrial, and communication constraints, which affects the optimal sensor-source geometry. In this article, we consider the problem of optimal sensor placement, based on time...

Toward the feasible solution of a long-lasting dynamic similitude problem

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; 2022 ; 09544100 (ISSN) Hajipourzadeh, P ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Dynamic similar models are designed to study the flight behavior of the full-scale aircraft in early design stages. Due to physical and operational constraints, full dynamic similarity between the scaled-down model and full-scale aircraft is not feasible. Thus, the scale model would be flying at different Reynolds number and Mach number. A given aircraft configuration with specific aerodynamic characteristics will have different performance if Mach number and Reynolds number are changed considerably, which results in different dynamic behavior of the scale model. To compensate for these dissimilarities, it is proposed to modify the airfoil geometry of the scale model to preserve aerodynamic...

, Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo: Power for Land, Sea, and Air ; Volume 5 , 2009 , Pages 183-189 ; 9780791848869 (ISBN) Saghafi, F ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The performance of Co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring is a function of secondary flow characteristics and the fluidic nozzle geometry. In terms of nozzle geometry, wall shape and the secondary slot aspect ratio are the main parameters that control the vector angle. The present study aims to find a high quality wall shape to achieve the best thrust vectoring performance, which is characterized by the maximum thrust deflection angle with respect to the injected secondary air. A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is employed to investigate the flow characteristics in thrust vectoring system. This model is validated using experimental data collected from the deflection of exhaust gases of...
