Functionalized carbon nanotubes in ZnO thin films for photoinactivation of bacteria

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 130, Issue 1-2 , October , 2011 , Pages 598-602 ; 02540584 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Azimirad, R ; Safa, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Two types of unfunctionalized and functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared to be applied in fabrication of MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposite thin films with various MWCNT contents. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated formation of functional groups on surface of the functionalized MWCNTs in the MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposite. Formation of the effective carbonaceous bonds between the ZnO and the MWCNTs was also investigated through photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria on surface of the both unfunctionalized and functionalized MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposites. The functionalized MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposites showed significantly stronger photoinactivation of the bacteria than the...

An exact analysis for the hoop elasticity and pressure-induced twist of CNT-nanovessels and CNT-nanopipes

    Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with and without end caps may be used for fluid storage and transport, respectively, referred to as CNT-nanovessel and CNT-nanopipe. The determination of the stiffness in the hoop (circumferential) and radial directions, ideal hoop strength, and hoop stress-strain curve of such nanostructures is of particular interest. Due to the proposed viewpoint, a chiral free-standing single-walled CNT (SWCNT) has a natural angle of twist and natural extension along the axis of the tube. For example, for the SWCNT (9,3) with diameter of 0.85 nm and chirality angle of 13.9°, the natural angle of twist per unit length is 1.45×10-3 rad/nm. Previously, only Vercosa et al. (2010) who...

In situ preparation and characterization of biocompatible acrylate-terminated polyurethane containing chemically modified multiwalled carbon nanotube

    Abstract
Biodegradable acrylate-terminated polyurethane/acrylate (APUA) filled with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT-HEMA) was prepared by in situ free radical crosslinking. CNT-HEMA enhanced crystallinity of soft domain and caused more phase separation between hard and soft domains of APUA. Tensile testing showed a considerable improvement in elastic modulus (∼160%) and tensile strength (∼30%) at 1 wt% loading. Morphological features of APUA induced by nanotubes were found to be dominant on mechanical properties of APUA/CNT-HEMA. CNT-HEMA increased water contact angle of APUA; however, wettability of APUA/CNT-HEMA maintained in acceptable range for biomedical...

Horseradish peroxidase immobilization on amine functionalized carbon nanotubes: Direct electrochemistry and bioelectrocatalysis

    Abstract
Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was successfully immobilized on amine functionalized TiO 2-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (NH 2-TiO 2-CNTs) by a convenient and efficient method. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and amperometry were applied to characterize the HRP/NH 2-TiO 2-CNT nano-composite. These techniques showed that the NH 2-TiO 2-CNTs greatly enhance the electron transfer between HRP and the modified electrode. Owing to the redox reaction of the electroactive centre of HRP, the HRP/NH 2-TiO 2-CNTs modified electrode exhibited a pair of quasi-reversible peaks with a peak-to-peak separation (ΔE p) of 70.6mV and a formal potential (E 0′) of -367.65mV (versus...

Electrochemical sensors based on functionalized carbon nanotubes modified with platinum nanoparticles for the detection of sulfide ions in aqueous media

    Abstract
Abstract : Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on stainless steel substrates coated by cobalt nanoparticles as catalyst. Morphological and elemental analyses conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) revealed that bamboo-like CNTs were blocked by Co nanoparticles at the tips. The fabricated nanotubes underwent functionalization by electrochemical oxidation in sulfuric acid, and the subsequent structural studies, as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed that the tips of functionalized CNTs were opened while oxygenated functional groups were...
