    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for detection and recognition of multi-view faces whose location is unknown and the illumination conditions are varying. The illumination is a big problem in the face detection and recognition aspects. Our proposed method doesn't use the skin color information for face detection. The detection of faces is accomplished after canceling the effect of the various illumination conditions. Two completely different methods are proposed for face detection in this paper. Because of the independency of the approaches to the face's skin color, the persons with every kind of skin colors are detected even in completely dark environments. Next, the detected faces are...

Improving the Method of Face Recognition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rabiepour, Siavash (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Face recognition is one of the best biometrics in computer vision. Although researchers introduced this method many years ago, the most important improvement has occurred in the biometrics last decade. Face recognition was employed in areas such as passport checking, security issues and identification. It facilitates our daily life as we use it in our mobile phones and computers for unlocking our devices. Many approaches were employed in the face recognition applications. Some of them were single-modal like PCA, ICA and LDA and some others were multimodal like Visual + 3D or 3D + IR. Still, most of Face recognition methods suffer from environment changes like variations in illumination and...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new method for eye detection in a sequence of video pictures. We first find the face region using the features of skin's color, then the location of eye is determined by applying three cues on the detected face region. The first cue is the eye intensity and color, because the intensity of each eye region is relatively low and its color differs from the color of surrounding skin. The second cue is based on the position and size of eyes. The third cue is based on the convolution of proposed-eye-variance-filter with the eye-window candidates. After finding the precise location of eye, it will be tracked in a finite search window. We have evaluated and tested the presented...

    Abstract
In recent years, processing the images that contain human faces has been a growing research interest because of establishment and development of automatic methods especially in security applications, compression, and perceptual user interface. In this paper, a new method has been proposed for multiple face detection and tracking in video frames. The proposed method uses skin color, edge and shape information, face detection, and dynamic movement analysis of faces for more accurate real-time multiple face detection and tracking purposes. One of the main advantages of the proposed method is its robustness against usual challenges in face tracking such as scaling, rotation, scene changes, fast...

    Abstract
The first step of any face processing system is detecting the location in images where faces are present. In this paper we present an upright frontal face detection system based on the multi-resolution analysis of the face. In this method firstly, skin-color information is used to detect skin pixels in color images; then, the skin-region blocks are decomposed into frequency sub-bands using contourlet transform. Features extracted from sub-bands are used to detect face in each block. A multi-layer perceptrone (MLP) neural network was trained to do this classification. To decrease false positive detection we use eyes and lips template matching. These templates achieved by averaging...

    Face Detection in Color Images

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arjomand Inalou, Sania (Author) ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Human face detection is an important research area with several applications such as human computer interface (HCI), face recognition, surveillance systems, security systems, and content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Face detection problem can be stated as “determining whether there are human faces in the image” and if there are “returning the location of each human face in the image” regardless of its position, size, scale, orientation, and lighting condition. In this thesis, we have proposed a new face detection method which combines the AdaBoost algorithm with skin color information and support vector machine (SVM). First, a cascade classifier based on AdaBoost is used to detect faces in...

Face Recognition Based on a Single Training Image for Each Person Across Large Pose Variations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Imanpour, Nasrin (Author) ; Manzuri-Shalmani, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most existing face recognition methods require several gallery (training) images per person for optimally training the system. On the other hand, in many real applications of face recognition such as law enforcement, driver’s license and identification by passport, generally only one image per person is available. However, “the variations between face images with different illumination and gestures are almost always larger than image variations due to change in face identity”, Therefore, in this thesis we have considered face recognition with changes in ambient lighting conditions and viewing angles where only one training image per person is availabe. A method have been proposed in which we...

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for detection and recognition of multi-view faces whose size and location is unknown and the illumination conditions are varying. The illumination is a big problem in face detection and recognition. In this paper, a new pre-processing method is proposed in order to cancel the effect of various illumination conditions on a face. Then, a binary face is obtained that its pixels are 0 or 1. Next, a fuzzy face model is produced from the distribution of zeros in the binary face. The model is used in order to detect faces in images by using a fuzzy approach. Because of the independency of the detection method to the skin color of face, persons with every kind of...

Finding sparse features for face detection using genetic algorithms

    Abstract
Although Face detection is not a recent activity in the field of image processing, it is still an open area for research. The greatest step in this field is the work reported by Viola and the recent analogous one is proposed by Huang et al. Both of them use similar features and also similar training process. The former is just for detecting upright faces, but the latter can detect multi-view faces in still grayscale images using new features called 'sparse feature'. Finding these features is very time consuming and inefficient by proposed methods. Here, we propose a new approach for finding sparse features using a genetic algorithm system. This method requires less computational cost and...

    Abstract
In this paper, we have proposed a new face detection method which combines the AdaBoost algorithm with skin color information and support vector machine (SVM). First, a cascade classifier based on AdaBoost is used to detect faces in images. Due to noise and illumination changes some nonfaces might be detected too, therefore we have used a skin color model in the YCbCr color space to remove some of the detected nonfaces. Finally, we have utilized SVM to detect faces more accurately. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is higher than the basic AdaBoost in the sense of detecting fewer nonfaces

    Abstract
Skin detection has different applications in computer vision such as face detection, human tracking and adult content filtering. One of the major approaches in pixel based skin detection is using Bayesian classifiers. Bayesian classifiers performance is highly related to their training set. In this paper, we introduce a new Bayesian classifier skin detection method. The main contribution of this paper is creating a huge database to create color probability tables and new method for creating skin pixels data set. Our database consists of about 80000 images containing more than 5 billions pixels. Our tests shows that the performance of Bayesian classifier trained on our data set is better than...

    Abstract
In this paper, we describe a real-time Gradient-based Multiple Faces Tracking (GMFT) algorithm in complex background. In GMFT method first faces are detected by combination of morphological facial feature extraction and gradient-based edge detection methods. After a face is reliably detected, it is tracked over time with a novel real-time algorithm. The algorithm has been implemented and tested under a wide range of real-world conditions. The resulting system runs in real-time on a standard PC, being robust to face scale variations, rotations in depth, and fast changes in subject/camera position. It has consistently provided performance which satisfies the following requirements: 1) able to...
