    , Article Clinical Biomechanics ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 527-535 ; 02680033 (ISSN) Sheikhzadeh, A ; Parnianpour, M ; Nordin, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: Work-related risk factors of low back disorders have been identified to be external moments, awkward postures, and asymmetrical dynamic lifting amongst others. The distinct role of asymmetry of load versus posture is hard to discern from the literature. Hence, the aim of this study is to measure isometric trunk exertions at upright standing posture at different exertion level and degree of asymmetry to further delineate the effects of exertion level and asymmetry on neuromuscular capability response. Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers randomly performed trunk exertions at three levels (30%, 60%, and 100% of maximum voluntary exertion and five different angles (0°, 45°, 90°,...

    Abstract
The role of the lumbar muscles in maintaining posture and balancing externally applied loads has been studied for many years.preliminary studies used electromyograpy (EMG) to establish a relationship between trunk posture and muscle ativity.so developing a better undrestanding of the functional role of those muscles. Determination of lumbar muscle forces, will have an important role in reducing low back pain I future. For this reason, reaserchers have done many studies for understanding the resistence and function on the musulosketal system bye using of various protocls and have utilized of various biomechanical models for determining the effects of applied externally loads on lumbar...

Design and evaluation of a novel triaxial isometric trunk muscle strength measurement system

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; Volume 223, Issue 6 , 2015 , Pages 755-766 ; 09544119 (ISSN) Azghani, M. R ; Farahmand, F ; Meghdari, A ; Vossoughi, G ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Maximal strength measurements of the trunk have been used to evaluate the maximum functional capacity of muscles and the potential mechanical overload or overuse of the lumbar spine tissues in order to estimate the risk of developing musculoskeletal injuries. A new triaxial isometric trunk strength measurement system was designed and developed in the present study, and its reliability and performance was investigated. The system consisted of three main revolute joints, equipped with torque sensors, which intersect at L5 - S1 and adjustment facilities to fit the body anthropometry and to accommodate both symmetric and asymmetric postures in both seated and standing positions. The dynamics of...

Trunk biomechanics during maximum isometric axial torque exertions in upright standing

    , Article Clinical Biomechanics ; Volume 23, Issue 8 , 2008 , Pages 969-978 ; 02680033 (ISSN) Arjmand, N ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Background: Activities involving axial trunk rotations/moments are common and are considered as risk factors for low back disorders. Previous biomechanical models have failed to accurately estimate the trunk maximal axial torque exertion. Moreover, the trunk stability under maximal torque exertions has not been investigated. Methods: A nonlinear thoracolumbar finite element model along with the Kinematics-driven approach is used to study biomechanics of maximal axial torque generation during upright standing posture. Detailed anatomy of trunk muscles with six distinct fascicles for each abdominal oblique muscle on each side is considered. While simulating an in vivo study of maximal axial...

Trunk muscles strength and endurance in chronic low back pain patients with and without clinical instability

    , Article Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 123-129 ; 10538127 (ISSN) Davarian, S ; Maroufi, N ; Ebrahimi, I ; Farahmand, F ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Objectives: Previous research has shown inconsistent findings regarding muscle endurance in chronic low back pain (CLBP). Questions also remain about muscle endurance in patients with clinical instability. The aim of this study was to investigate trunk muscles strength and endurance in CLBP patients with and without clinical instability. Methods: 32 CLBP patients (15 with and 17 without clinical instability) and 39 matched healthy subjects participated in this study. The standing extension test was performed to assess the strength and endurance of the lumbar extensors while recording their electromyographic activity. The patients' disability was evaluated using the Oswestry and Roland-Morris...

Trunk musculoskeletal response in maximum voluntary exertions: a combined measurement-modeling investigation

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 70 , March , 2018 , Pages 124-133 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Ghezelbash, F ; El Ouaaid, Z ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Plamondon, A ; Arjmand, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Maximum voluntary exertion (MVE) tasks quantify trunk strength and maximal muscle electromyography (EMG) activities with both clinical and biomechanical implications. The aims here are to evaluate the performance of an existing trunk musculoskeletal model, estimate maximum muscle stresses and spinal forces, and explore likely differences between males and females in maximum voluntary exertions. We, therefore, measured trunk strength and EMG activities of 19 healthy right-handed subjects (9 females and 10 males) in flexion, extension, lateral and axial directions. MVEs for all subjects were then simulated in a subject-specific trunk musculoskeletal model, and estimated muscle activities were...

Muscle-driven forward dynamics simulation for the study of differences in muscle function during stair ascent and descent

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; Volume 223, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 863-874 ; 09544119 (ISSN) Ghafari, A. S ; Meghdari, A ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main scope of this study is to analyse muscle-driven forward dynamics simulation of stair locomotion to understand the functional differences of individual muscles during the movement. A static optimization was employed to minimize a performance criterion based on the muscle energy consumption to resolve muscle redundancy during forward dynamics simulation. The proposed method was employed to simulate a musculoskeletal system with ten degrees of freedom in the sagittal plane and containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg. Simulation results illustrated that simulated joint kinematics closely tracked experimental quantities with root-mean-squared errors less than 1°. In...
