    Abstract
Toughening of epoxy with different types of modifiers produces a bimodal blend that might show better fracture resistance in comparison with single-modified ones. In this research, bimodal epoxy formulations including mixtures of glass microsphere and silica nanoparticles are explored for possible synergistic toughening. The influence of composition on the glass transition temperature (Tg), tensile characteristics, and fracture toughness (KIC) is investigated. Interestingly, a synergism in fracture toughness is observed when mixtures of modifiers were incorporated. For the fixed overall modifier content, KIC is higher when the volume fraction of glass microsphere is lesser than the volume...

    , Article Journal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers and Materials ; Vol. 24, issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 745-752 ; ISSN: 1574-1443 Razavi, S. M ; Ahmadi, S. J ; Rahmani Cherati, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
High chemical resistance is the main prerequisites for materials that are intended to be utilized in usages such as chemicals storage containers production. Nanocomposites of epoxy resin containing nanoclay, CaCO3 and TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared and their chemical resistance was studied. Moreover, the effect of electron beam irradiation was explored. TEM micrographs proved the dispersion of nano-size particles in the polymeric matrix. XRD patterns showed an exfoliated structure for nanocomposite containing 1 % nanoclay and intercalated structures for nanocomposites with higher nanoclay contents. SEM showed the pits that appeared in epoxy/nanoclay structure due to chemical corrosion....

    Abstract
In this paper, we review recent progress made in the field of epoxy-based binary and ternary nanocomposites containing three-, two-, and one-dimensional (i.e., 3D-, 2D-, and 1D) nano-size fillers with a special focus on their fracture behaviors. Despite investigations conducted so far to evaluate the crack-resistance of epoxy nanocomposites and attempts made to clarify the controlling toughening mechanisms of these materials, some questions remain unsolved. It is shown that silica nanoparticles can be as effective as rubber particles in improving the fracture toughness/energy; but incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or clay platelets in epoxy matrices delays crack growth only modestly....

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions A: Basics ; Volume 30, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 93-100 ; 17281431 (ISSN) Marouf, B. T ; Pearson, R. A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate adhesion property between nano-layered filler and the polymer matrix using a combination of experimental and micromechanical models as well as the changes in yield strength and stiffness of a layered silicate-filled epoxy nanocomposite. The results indicate that addition of intercalated layered silicate particles increased Young's modulus and yield strength of the epoxy resin, although the increases in stiffness and yield strength are modest, 30% and 4%, respectively. In addition, experimental results were compared with predictive stiffening and strengthening models. The rule of mixtures provides an upper bound for the modulus in these materials, while...

    Abstract
In this research, the effect of adding graphene-based aerogel ((G)A) nanoparticles on the tensile and fatigue behavior of the epoxy polymer was investigated. Specimens of nanocomposites were prepared by adding 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 wt.-% (G)A nanoparticles to the epoxy polymer. Tensile tests revealed that the 0.1 wt.-% graphene-based aerogel/ epoxy ((G)A/E) nanocomposites had the highest increase in tensile strength with 19 % growth compared to neat epoxy. Also, the tensile modulus increased by 15 % in the 0.5 wt.-% (G)A/E nanocomposites. A substantial improvement in fatigue life of the epoxy polymer was observed on adding 0.1 wt.-% (G)A nanoparticles. For instance, the fatigue life...

    Abstract
Graphene-based carbon hollow spheres (CHSs) fabrication, doped with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) was successfully done in previous work. The active/barrier corrosion protection performance (CPP) of epoxy coatings was evaluated using salt spray test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Results proved the active/barrier CPP enhancement of epoxy coatings in the presence of 3 wt. % MBI@CHSs. While the presence of MBI and empty CHSs in epoxy coatings did not further improve the active performance. An improvement in the adhesion loss of the epoxy coating, ca. 58 %, was observed in the presence of 3 wt. % MBI@CHSs. © 2021

    Abstract
Carbon nanocapsules doped separately with epoxy and polyamine were used to fabricate an epoxy nanocomposite coating. Carbon nanospheres with dual-encapsulated epoxy/polyamine were dispersed uniformly in the epoxy resin at concentrations of 2, 5, and 10 wt %. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were studied by tensile testing and scratch hardness measurements. Furthermore, nanocomposites were applied on mild steel substrates, and their corrosion protection and barrier performance were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Adhesion loss measurements of coatings after 240 h exposure to 3.5 wt % NaCl solution were performed by pull-off adhesion testing. Also,...

Effects of two- and three-dimensional graphene-based nanomaterials on the fatigue behavior of epoxy nanocomposites

    Abstract
Epoxy resins and their derivatives, such as composites and epoxy adhesives, are widely used in various industries. However, epoxy resins have low performance against dynamic loading and crack propagation. Graphene-based nanomaterials can improve the mechanical performance of polymeric composites because of their appropriate mechanical properties and high surface area. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Two-Dimensional Graphene Oxide (2DGO) and Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Graphene (3D(N)G) nanomaterials on the fatigue behavior of epoxy resin. 2DGO was produced by the modified Hummer's method and 3D(N)G was synthesised by hydrothermal process, followed by freeze-drying....

    Abstract
In this study, nano-sized diamond particles (ND) were functionalized in two consecutive stages. First, dry thermal oxidation was employed to obtain carboxylated ND. In the next step, carboxylated ND was properly surface modified through wet chemistry to acquire aminated-ND (ND-NH2). Then, polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized in the presence of aminated-ND particles at a broad concentration from 1 wt% to 70 wt% to obtain PANI/ND hybrid nanostructures. The chemical structure, morphology, and thermal stability of nanoparticles were comprehensively characterized by different techniques such as FT-IR, UV–visible, TGA, XRD, FESEM, and TEM. It was observed that the morphology of PANI/ND...
