, Article 4th IEEE International Symposium on Electronic Design, Test and Applications, DELTA 2008, Hong Kong, SAR, 23 January 2008 through 25 January 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 555-560 ; 0769531105 (ISBN); 9780769531106 (ISBN) Bakhshi, S ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The interconnection network between the processor cores in multiprocessors on chip has a crucial impact on the performance. Efficient VLSI layout area of such networks can result in lower costs and better performance. Layouts with more compact area can lead in shorter wires and therefore the signal propagation through the wires may take place in shorter time. In this paper, we study the VLSI layout bounds of a new product network, called the Edge Graph Product. Lower bounds are usually computed by the crossing number and bisection width of the topological graphs. For computing the bisection width and crossing number of the edge graph product, we use the obtained upper bound on maximal...

On the distortion value of elections with abstention

    , Article Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research ; Volume 70 , 2021 , Pages 567-595 ; 10769757 (ISSN) Seddighin, M ; Latifian, M ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In Spatial Voting Theory, distortion is a measure of how good the winner is. It has been proved that no deterministic voting mechanism can guarantee a distortion better than 3, even for simple metrics such as a line. In this study, we wish to answer the following question: How does the distortion value change if we allow less motivated agents to abstain from the election? We consider an election with two candidates and suggest an abstention model, which is a general form of the abstention model proposed by Kirchgässner. Our results characterize the distortion value and provide a rather complete picture of the model. ©2021 AI Access Foundation

Existence of chaos in the fractional order unified system: The lowest effective dimension

    , Article ELECO 2011 - 7th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 1 December 2011 through 4 December 2011 ; Dec , 2011 , Pages II396-II399 ; 9786050102048 (ISBN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper deals with the existence of chaos in the fractional order unified system. In an earlier published work, based on the numerical simulation results it is claimed that the lowest effective dimension in the fractional order unified system in order to present chaotic behaviors is 2.76. In this paper, it is analytically shown that the fractional order unified system can be chaotic for effective dimensions lower than the claimed lowest effective dimension. Also, the lowest effective dimension for existence of chaos in such a system is analytically determined. Computer simulation results, obtained based on a reliable numerical method, are brought to back up the presented analytical work...

Identification of fractional order model structures using conversion of infinite terms of a response to finite terms

    , Article ELECO 2011 - 7th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 1 December 2011 through 4 December 2011 ; December , 2011 , Pages II391-II395 ; 9786050102048 (ISBN) Nazarian, P ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, a new method is proposed to determine parameters of some types of fractional order models to represent a system dynamics using its step response. The model structure is assumed to have rational commensurateorder as α = M/N . By this assumption infinite terms of the model step response is converted into finite terms limited to N. The proposed method is practically applicable on all fractional order model structures due to the order approximation imposed by the limited precisions in available computational tools

Conditions on polynomials involved in admittance functions passively realizable by using rlc and two fractional elements

, Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs ; Volume 67, Issue 6 , 2020 , Pages 999-1003 Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This brief deals with finding the necessary conditions which should be met by the polynomials appeared in the admittance functions passively realizable by using RLC components and two fractional elements. These conditions include structurally necessary equalities/specifications and positive-realness-based inequalities which should be satisfied by the involved polynomials. In the realizable cases, the acceptable region for choosing the pseudo inductances/capacitances of fractional elements is found from the obtained conditions. © 2004-2012 IEEE

Decomposition of the time delay systems with one delay: The simultaneous similarity of two matrices

    , Article ELECO 2013 - 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bursa ; 2013 , Pages 487-491 ; 9786050105049 (ISBN) Mesbahi, A ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2013
    Abstract
The time delay equations are frequently used to model real systems since they can describe the after-effect phenomenon. It is usually difficult to analyze the properties of time delay systems. Thus it would be beneficial to make the systems as simple as possible. For this purpose, the decomposition of the systems into some separate or cascaded sub-systems with smaller dimension is introduced as the solution of the mentioned complex task. The decomposition of the time delay systems with one delay is directly related to simultaneous similarity of two matrices. In this regard, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of a common similar block diagonal or triangular form...

A new approach for AC state estimation based on a linear network model

    , Article ELECO 2013 - 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering ; 2013 , Pages 117-121 ; 9786050105049 (ISBN) Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Lehtonen, M ; Ozdemir, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a new and efficient formulation for the state estimation (SE) which can be solved in one single shot of computation. The proposed approach adopts line flows and the square of voltage magnitudes as the problem state variable and considers both active and reactive power quantities. The objective function is to minimize the weighted sum of the least square values of measurement residuals. The nonlinearity associated with line losses is left by assuming these values as slack variables. Numerical studies are conducted through two standard networks. In order to compare the performance of the proposed method, the conventional weighted least square (WLS) state estimation with...

    Abstract
We consider the problem of private information retrieval (PIR), where a single user with private side information (PSI) aims to retrieve multiple files from a library stored at some servers. We assume that the side information (SI) at the user includes a subset of files stored privately. Moreover, the identity of requests and side information at the user are not revealed to any of the servers. The problem involves finding the minimum load transmitted from the servers to the user such that the requested files can be decoded with the help of received data and side information. By providing matching lower and upper bounds for certain regimes, we characterize the minimum load imposed on all the...

Two-dimensional multi-parameter adaptation of noise, linearity, and power consumption in wireless receivers

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers ; Vol. 61, issue. 8 , July , 2014 , p. 2433-2443 Meghdadi, M ; Sharif Bakhtiar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a general method for real-time adaptation of wireless receivers according to the prevailing reception conditions. In order to maintain the desired signal quality at the minimum possible power dissipation, the method performs an optimal trade-off between noise, linearity, and power consumption in the building blocks of the receiver. This is achieved by continuously monitoring the signal-to-noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) and accordingly tuning the adaptation parameters embedded in the receiver design. A prototype DVB-H receiver chip, implemented in a standard 0.18-μ m CMOS process, is used as the test vehicle. By properly trading noise with linearity in the receiver,...

On tuning FO[PI] controllers for FOPDT processes

    , Article Electronics Letters ; Volume 49, Issue 21 , 2013 , Pages 1326-1328 ; 00135194 (ISSN) Badri, V ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A method recently proposed for tuning fractional order [proportional integral] (FO[PI]) controllers is investigated. This tuning method, when applied in control of first-order plus dead time (FOPDT) processes, can ensure the desired phase margin, the desired gain crossover frequency and the flatness of the phase Bode plot at such a frequency. The necessary and sufficient condition for the applicability of the aforementioned tuning method is derived. Also, it is shown that this condition can be used in obtaining the achievable performance region of the tuning method in the gain crossover frequency-phase margin plane

Adaptive leader-following consensus in multi-agent systems with second-order nonlinear dynamics and directed switching topologies

    , Article 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, ELECO 2013, Bursa, 28 November 2013 through 30 November 2013 ; 2013 , Pages 482-486 ; 9786050105049 (ISBN) Atrianfar, H ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we develop control algorithms for addressing second-order consensus problems in intrinsically second-order nonlinear multi-agent dynamical systems with switching topologies. The proposed adaptive controller applies a leader-following strategy in which all agents are assumed to be informed of the leader's state. Another feature of this work which specifically distinguishes it from others is that the proposed controller uses undirected and directed graphs to accommodate for a full range of possible graph information topologies without limitations of bidirectional communication

Reduced communications fault tolerant task scheduling algorithm for multiprocessor systems

    , Article Procedia Engineering ; Volume 29 , 2012 , Pages 3820-3825 ; 18777058 (ISSN) Tabbaa, N ; Entezari Maleki, R ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multiprocessor systems have been widely used for the execution of parallel applications. Task scheduling is crucial for the right operation of multiprocessor systems, where the aim is shortening the length of schedules. Fault tolerance is becoming a necessary attribute in multiprocessor systems as the number of processing elements is getting larger. This paper presents a fault tolerant scheduling algorithm for task graph applications in multiprocessor systems. The algorithm is an extension of a previously proposed algorithm with a reduced communications scheme. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm despite its simplicity

A new approach for long-term electricity load forecasting

    , Article ELECO 2013 - 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering ; 2013 , Pages 122-126 ; 9786050105049 (ISBN) Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Aghazadeh, M ; Ozdemir, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Long-term electricity load and price forecasts have become critical inputs to energy service provider (ESP) decision makings in restructured environments. This paper presents a three-stage hierarchical approach for long-term electricity load forecasting. These stages are called yearly trend model (YTM), weekly trend model (WTM), and daily trend model (DTM). The first stage fits an appropriate function to data and extracts its yearly trend. The weekly and daily trends are then extracted using the Box-Jenkins method in WTM and DTM, respectively. For doing so, candidate trends are identified using auto correlation function (ACF) and partial auto correlation function (PACF) plots. Then, Akaike...

Low power DAC with single capacitor sampling method for SAR ADCs

    , Article Electronics Letters ; Volume 52, Issue 14 , 2016 , Pages 1209-1210 ; 00135194 (ISSN) Yazdani, B ; Khorami, A ; Sharifkhani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2016
    Abstract
An ultra-efficient switching method for successive approximation register ADCs is proposed. In this method, the input signals are sampled in a special fashion to reduce the switching energy. Owing to the sampling method, only one reference voltage (Vq=Vref/4) is required to implement the switching steps. Therefore, in addition to reduction in the switching energy (due to the lower supply voltage), the precision of the DAC is improved. The proposed method reduces the switching energy and area by 99.41 and 50%, respectively, compared with the conventional method. © 2016 The Institution of Engineering and Technology

A new framework to train autoencoders through non-smooth regularization

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing ; Volume 67, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 1860-1874 ; 1053587X (ISSN) Amini, S ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
Deep structures consisting of many layers of nonlinearities have a high potential of expressing complex relations if properly initialized. Autoencoders play a complementary role in training a deep structure by initializing each layer in a greedy unsupervised manner. Due to the high capacity presented by autoencoders, these structures need to be regularized. While mathematical regularizers (based on weight decay, sparsity, etc.) and structural ones (by way of, e.g., denoising and dropout) have been well studied in the literature, quite a few papers have addressed the problem of training autoencoder with non-smooth regularization. In this paper, we address the problem of training autoencoder...

    Abstract
Purpose: This paper aims to propose a novel matrix-based systematic approach for vulnerability assessment. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed method consists of two major steps. First, the power network is modeled as a topological combination of edges (transmission lines, transformers, etc.) and nodes (buses, substations, etc.). The second step is to use an axiomatic design-based index for topology analysis. This index is based on the systematic counting of possible routes from the start (generators) to destination (loads), considering load importance, before and after a disruption. Findings: The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through an illustrative example and...

    Abstract
By taking a new sight into the system dynamic equations, the controllers are designed based on the simplification and converting higher order dynamics to the first order systems. This issue not only simplifies controller design but also stabilize system in all operational points. Moreover, proposed controllers are applied to the parallel Active Power Filters (APFs) because of the new trends in modularizing of APFs. On the other hand, the IEEE-1459 standard has proposed new definitions for the power in unbalanced and non-sinusoidal conditions and it stimulated researchers to use this standard for controlling APF directly. However, the proposed definitions are based on RMS values and...

Expansion of Power Definition in IEEE-1459 in Order to Apply to Shunt Active Power Filters

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Meysam (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Increase of nonlinear loads has led rise of harmonic currents, voltage distortion and imbalance in power system. Those polluted nonsinusuidal environments have made electrical engineer and researchers to define new and more compelet definition of electrical power quantities such as power factor, apparent power, THD and … . The new definitions have resulted in new methods of power quality enhancement technique. IEEE-1459 Std. proposes definitions for electric power in sinusoidal, nonsinusoidal, balanced and unbalanced conditions which can be used for compensation of nonsinusoidal and unbalanced systems. This reaserch introduces a new method to obtain shunt active filter reference signal. This...

Throughput Analysis of Routing Algorithms in 802.11s-Based Wireless Mesh Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhang, Rouhollah (Author) ; Ashtiani, Farid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) can be considered as the result of cooperation among two ad hoc networks, one composed of Mesh Points (MPs) and another one composed of Mesh Clients (MCs) as well as corresponding Access (Mesh) Points. Each one has its own functions and properties. This cooperation results in a flexible network that to fully demonstrate its potentials, requires special routing algorithms and access schemes. Here, we study and analyze three routing algorithms in IEEE 802.11s-based WMNs from throughput point of view. To this end, each node in the network is modeled by a queue during Contention-Free Periods (CFPs). During Contention-Based Period, however, to simplify modeling, we...
