New approach for strategic bidding of gencos in energy and spinning reserve markets

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 48, Issue 7 , 2007 , Pages 2044-2052 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Soleymani, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Shirani, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In restructured and de-regulated power systems, generating companies (Gencos) are responsible for supplying electricity for both energy and reserve markets, which usually operate simultaneously. In this condition, the question is how much and for what price must each Genco generate for each market to maximize its profit, so this paper intends to answer to this question. In this paper, first, the combined energy and reserve markets are considered, and the Nash equilibrium points are determined. Then, the bidding strategies for each Genco at these points will be presented. The bids for the energy and 10 min spinning reserve (TMSR) markets are separated in the second stage, and again, the...

    , Article 3rd International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications, HPCC 2007, Houston, TX, 26 September 2007 through 28 September 2007 ; Volume 4782 LNCS , 2007 , Pages 766-775 ; 03029743 (ISSN); 9783540754435 (ISBN) Nayebi, A ; Shamaei, A ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Verlag  2007
    Abstract
Currently, some coarse measures like global network latency are used to compare routing protocols. These measures do not provide enough insight of traffic distribution among network nodes in presence of different fault regions. This paper presents a detailed traffic analysis of f-cube routing algorithm achieved by a especially developed tool. Per-node traffic analysis illustrates the traffic hotspots caused by fault regions and provides a great assistance in developing fault tolerant routing algorithms. Based on such detailed information, a simple yet effective improvement of f-cube is suggested. Moreover, the effect of a traffic hotspot on the traffic of neighboring nodes and global...

    Abstract
Smart energy systems can mitigate electric interruption costs provoked by manifold disruptive events via making efforts toward proper pre-disturbance preparation and optimal post-disturbance restoration. In this context, effective contingency management in power distribution networks calls for contemplating disparate parameters from interconnected electric and transportation systems. This chapter, while considering transportation issues in power networks’ field operations, presents a navigation system for pre-positioning resources such as field crews and reconfiguring the network to acquire a more robust configuration in advance of the imminent catastrophe. Also, after the occurrence of the...

    Abstract
One of the most important issues in every country is electric power planning in all aspects like production and distribution. Electric power distribution planning is a way to control and optimize the usage of energy. According to shortage of resources and high value of them, it is important to have a plan in the amount of energy sending from supplier to consumer. Based on the nature of the problem that decision makers face different criteria from internal and external environment, using multi-criteria decision making methods is an appropriate way. By finding parameters, constraints and capacity of the system, we can choose the best method. On the other hand, in real world most of the...

    , Article IET Conference Publications ; Vol. 2013, issue. 615 CP , 2013 ; ISBN: 9781850000000 Shafiee, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Rastegar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Smart grids are envisioned to support large penetrations of electrical vehicles driven by economical and environmental signals. Nevertheless, distribution system operators are becoming concerned about distribution congestion that may occur in the network with multiple domestic plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) charging. Therefore, investigating the impacts of high PHEV penetration levels on the performance of distribution networks seems to be essential for system operators and planners. Doing so, in this paper, PHEV characteristics are precisely extracted from valid published reports and surveys. Accordingly, a comprehensive model for investigating the impacts of different PHEV...

Integration of clustering analysis and reward/penalty mechanisms for regulating service reliability in distribution systems

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Vol. 5, issue. 11 , 2011 , p. 1192-1200 ; ISSN: 17518687 Mohammadnezhad-Shourkaei, H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Billinton, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study proposes an approach for improving service reliability in the distribution network based on establishing competition among electric distribution utilities. The idea behind this approach is to categorise the utilities and compare the performance of utilities located in one cluster with the other members of the same cluster. The reward/penalty mechanism (RPM) as a quality regulating instrument is designed for each cluster and used to penalise the utilities with a performance worse than the benchmark and to reward them for providing a performance better than the benchmark. Based on the RPM, utilities located in one cluster compete to make more profit by serving customers in better...

    Abstract
Due to the important role that distribution systems play in quality of power delivered to the customers, there has always been a great deal of interest in investigating different methods of efficiency enhancement for these networks. Two of these methods are Feeder Reconfiguration (FR) and Capacitor Allocation (CA); both have been widely employed to reduce losses and improve several other operational characteristics in electrical power distribution systems. As in FR process the topology of the network changes, it is necessary to change some previous settings; for instance: the capacity of capacitor banks in service in each bus, after each reconfiguration process. This is due to the fact that...

    Abstract
This paper presents an effective control scheme in dc microgrids to precisely share the load current oscillatory and dc components among distributed generation (DG) units. The proposed control strategy includes current and voltage control blocks. The current control block consists of oscillatory and dc current-sharing units. The main idea of the proposed method is to share the load current oscillatory and dc components among the DG units based on their rated power, by assigning appropriate output impedance values and droop coefficients to each DG unit. The voltage control block is a multiloop voltage control unit employed to control the microgrid voltage. The detailed model of the proposed...

Benefits of demand response on operation of distribution networks: a case study

    Abstract
Despite of the great focus of attention dedicated to demand response (DR), the potential benefits of DR on distribution networks have not yet been quantitatively studied. This paper aims to assess DR potential impacts on major attributes of the operation of a residential distribution network. For doing so, grossly metered usage of more than 1600 residential consumers from Kainuu, Finland, is disaggregated to appliance-level load profiles. The flexibility of the load profiles is also estimated from the survey data and questionnaires. The individual profiles are then adjusted within their flexibility such that the most evenly distributed aggregated load profile is realized. Finally, the...

    Abstract
Sectionalizing switches play a crucial role in enhancing service reliability to the end users of distribution networks. However, they might encounter failures, thereby causing interruptions in the networks. The existing switch placement models consider only the pros of switches in improving service reliability, while they fail to deem switches cons in possible failures and thus increasing system interruptions. This letter intends to show the importance of switch failure in the switch placement problem and the extent to which switch failure alters the switches allocation in a network. To do so, we develop a novel model based on mixed integer programming format to integrate the impacts of...
