, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ashkarran, Ali Akbar (Author) ; Iraji Zad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Mahdavi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research we focus on synthesis and analysis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activity. At the beginning a high current DC power supply and a reactor for the electrical arc discharge process designed and implemented. Several nanoparticles such as tungsten oxide, zinc oxide, silver and gold have synthesized by this method in deionized water, deionized water including surfactants and stabilizers and analyzed. Several characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy have...

Investigation on the Solfate and Chloride ion Concentration on Carbon Nanotubes Frmation Via Arc Discharge in Aqueous Solution

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shervin, Shahab (Author) ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Khomamizade, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized via arc discharge in an aqueous solution. The role of iron catalyst in CNTs formation was investigated utilizing arc discharge in iron salts solution (Fe2(SO4)3 and FeCl3). Thermogarvimetric (TG) analysis showed the presence of multi-layered structures including multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and multi-shelled graphite particles when processing was performed in DI-water. In the presence of iron ions, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) were formed. The effect of iron ions (Fe3+) concentration on CNTs yield was investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The highest yield was obtained when...

Synthesis and Optimization of Endohedral Metall of Ullerene Production in Arc Reactor Applying Vertical Graphite Electrodes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarepour Jevinani, Morteza (Author) ; Ghanbari, Bahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the considerable issues in fullereneresearch is low yield of endohedral fullerene production. In this project, synthesis and optimization of endohedral metallofullereneproduction was undertaken byarc reactor applying vertical graphite electrodes, using vaporizing composite lanthanum-oxide-graphite-dopped rod. Increasing the efficiency of endohedral fullerrene production in sootwas followed applyingcarbide formation in electrode which was studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In addition, as a simple and fast method, the liquid column chromatography was applied in separation and purification of fullerenes as well as endohedral...

Synthesis and Characterization of Nano-photocatalytic Metal Oxide / Graphene Using arc Discharge in Liquid

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojaee, Vahid (Author) ; Iraji Zad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Ahadian, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, graphene/titanium oxide and graphene/tungsten oxide composites were synthesized using arc discharge in liquid and their photocatalytic behavior was studied. Based on physical principles of the arc discharge in liquid, geometry of point-point was used for metallic Ti and W electrodes. TiO2 and WO3 nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with graphene and graphene oxide (GO) were studies using DLS, UV-vis, PL, ICP, FTIR, XRD, Raman and TEM characterization. The concentration of aqueous solution of Rhodamine B mixed with graphene/WO3 and GO/WO3 composites and WO3 nanoparticles under ultraviolet light was measured versus time and reached to 0.1, 0.6 and 0.6 of the initial value...

Synthesis and Optical Properties of Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles Prepared by Arc Discharge Method in Liquid Nitrogen

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabani, Alireza (Author) ; Irajizad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Production of nano-particles using arc-discharge method in a liquid nitrogen environment is a proficient way of forming nitride Particles whose formation by other methods is difficult and expensive. Amongstall, Titanium nitride (TiN) is of significant importance because of its high formidability and its optical and electrical metal properties due to plasmonic electrons. This research studies the production of titanium nitride Nano-particles using arc-discharge method and investigates optical properties and features, specially dielectric constant and optical extinction coefficient. Modeling interband Transitions is also discussed to revise Drude's electron theory. First, in experimental...

    Cubr Laser Oscillator and Amplifier

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Osati, Alireza (Author) ; Sadighi Bonabi, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, a system consisting of two oscillating and amplifier lasers was designed and constructed. The aim was to use this combination to measure important parameters of CuBr vapor laser. Therefore, two separate Thyratrons switching by a two-pulse control circuit with an arbitrary time delay have been used. Due to the sensitivity of these lasers to tube pressure, two quartz tubes with specific designs was used. This enables us to get a proper vacuum as well as to prevent from impurities in the windows, in a short range of time. In this system, the output light from oscillator is led to the amplifier and after a proper delay time, amplifying was observed.
    Based on...

Analysis of Energy of High Voltage Arcing in the Cathode of Microwave Vacuum Tubes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khazeinasab, Rashid (Author) ; kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, semiconductor devices have incrementally taken the place of microwave tubes beneficially. However, microwave tubes are still indispensable in very high voltage usages (10 Kilowatts to 10 Megawatts) and high frequencies (Gigahertz and higher). Concerning that these tubes are of the most sensitive and expensive parts of such systems, protection measures are of high importance. One of the phenomena that cause failure or degradation of tubes is electric arc in cathode of the tubes and dissipating energy due to that. In order to prevent the tubes from undergoing such harm, protection must be put into consideration. Furthermore, the limit of this dissipating energy determines the...
