    Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the sustainability of two actual wastewater treatment plants using the eco-efficiency index based on emergy and life cycle analysis. The life cycle analysis is used for environmental investigation to estimate the eco-efficiency index. Moreover, the emergy theory indicating the input and output flows of the ecosystem are applied to assess the sustainability considering ecosystem services. Two treatment plants are studied in the city of Mashhad in Iran. The potential for sustainability improvement of plants is analyzed in some scenarios including the production of agricultural compost from sludge, 10% reduction of energy consumption, and 10% reduction of...

Design of Sustainable Electronic Waste Management System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vatani, Zhaleh (Author) ; Avami, Akram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The growing amounts of generation of electronic wastes (e-waste) and their increasing environmental impacts require a special optimal waste management strategy. Many different methods have been developed to managing e-waste. To make the best choices according to the conditions of each system, having an adequate knowledge of all methods and comparing them is the most important point. This research aims to design a system for managing e-waste by selecting mobile phones as an example of electronic waste and find the optimal condition of the system to increase economic benefits and reduce environmental impact. Recycling and landfill are selected as the main methods in this project. Four lines...

An optimization-oriented green design for methanol plants

    , Article Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology ; Volume 87, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 1111-1120 ; 02682575 (ISSN) Taghdisian, H ; Farhadi, F ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley  2012
    Abstract
Background: A new design for a methanol plant is proposed in which CO 2 addition, as one of the important parameters, is used to optimize the synthesis gas composition. An attempt has been made to assess the environmental features as well as the process operability of the proposed plant, in which the required CO 2 is provided from reformer flue gas. As a starting point, simulation of a conventional reference methanol case (RMC) and also the proposed green integrated methanol case (GIMC) are performed to obtain operational and kinetic parameters. In order to compare properly GIMC and RMC, the objective function is defined so that SynGas production, and thereby methanol production, in the GIMC...

On the environmental effectiveness analysis of energy policies: A case study of air pollution in the megacity of Tehran

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 705 , 2020 Taksibi, F ; Khajehpour, H ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
The present study compared different approaches to assessing the environmental cost-effectiveness of energy policy scenarios. As a case study, the megacity of Tehran in Iran was studied. A key policy challenge in this city is to curb high concentrations of PM2.5 and mitigate the associated adverse impacts. The results demonstrated that in the business as usual case, the spatially averaged primary and secondary PM2.5 concentration in Tehran will increase by 30% in the 2010–2030 period. Adopting certain planned policy scenarios and the corresponding pollutant concentration reductions in Tehran shows that although most of the emission comes from industrial activities around the city, the...
