    Abstract
Several mathematical modeling approaches are used to model water resources systems such as deterministic and non-deterministic, lumped and distributed, steady and dynamic, simulation and optimization approaches. All these modeling paradigms - categorized as open systems - assume that the input conditions to the system will not change during their operation. What is happening in the real world is somewhat different. Due to their dynamic behaviors, real world events exert feedbacks from their outputs to their inputs which may cause the input conditions vary with time. This is the main focus of the system dynamics theory which has been introduced in this paper to be applied in water resources...

Trunk dynamic stability assessment for individuals with and without nonspecific low back pain during repetitive movement

    , Article Human Factors ; 2020 Asgari, M ; Mokhtarinia, H. R ; Sanjari, M. A ; Kahrizi, S ; Philip, G. C ; Parnianpour, M ; Khalaf, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Inc  2020
    Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to employ nonlinear dynamic approaches to assess trunk dynamic stability with speed, symmetry, and load during repetitive flexion-extension (FE) movements for individuals with and without nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP). Background: Repetitive trunk FE movement is a typical work-related LBP risk factor contingent on speed, symmetry, and load. Improper settings/adjustments of these control parameters could undermine the dynamic stability of the trunk, hence leading to low back injuries. The underlying stability mechanisms and associated control impairments during such dynamic movements remain elusive. Method: Thirty-eight male volunteers (19 healthy, 19 NSLBP)...

The design of a system dynamics model of crowdfunding for support of new knowledge-based IT startups

    , Article International Journal of Simulation and Process Modelling ; Volume 15, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 454-474 Haji Gholam Saryazdi, A ; Rajabzadeh Ghatari, A ; Mashayekhi, A ; Hassanzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Considering the problem of funding start-ups because of their nature, some entrepreneurs developed crowdfunding in which funding is done via social network. Crowdfunding is a complicated and dynamic phenomenon. In addition, studies conducted on crowdfunding are not significant in number and they have been conducted in exploratory and partial manner. As a result, it is necessary to adopt an approach capable of understanding complex dynamic phenomena so as to be able to explain a crowdfunding. The present paper designs a system dynamics model of crowdfunding for support of new Iranian knowledge-based IT startups so as to highlight the complexities and dynamics of crowdfunding. The results of...

Subsidy cut and its effect on tehran electricity company: A system dynamics approach

    , Article Proceedings of the 2012 - Summer Computer Simulation Conference, SCSC 2012, Part of SummerSim 2012 Multiconference ; Volume 44, Issue 10 , 2012 , Pages 113-120 ; 9781618399847 (ISBN) Mehmanchi, E ; Fard, S. Z
    2012
    Abstract
In recent years, subsidy payment has been made a main challenge for governments due to growth of population and energy price in global markets. Targeted subsidy plan has been implemented in Iran since last year, and this article discusses its effects on costs and revenues of Tehran Electricity Company as one of the major subdivisions of Iran's electricity industry. In the new system, structural changes have been made in electricity tariffs, so it is not possible to predict the future trends in electricity consumption only based on the past consumptions. In order to model the decision making structure in the recent conditions, a system dynamics method is applied. In addition to modeling the...

A system dynamics model for improving flood control operation policies

, Article World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2012: Crossing Boundaries, Proceedings of the 2012 Congress ; 2012 , Pages 962-972 ; 9780784412312 (ISBN) Shafiee Jood, M ; Dashti, M ; Abrishamchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The inherent complexities of multi-reservoir flood control systems and their operation conditions along with the improvements of optimization methods have led to a positive trend on better development of these models. This trend tends to provide the operators of these systems with more practical solutions. Although optimization models can provide appropriate solutions for operation of multi-reservoir systems, the exact implementation of these solutions in real world is not guaranteed. This arises mainly due to high level risk of flood situation, real time operation constraints, high level uncertainties of inflows that usually are overlooked in optimization models, and so on. These problems...

Developing three dimensional potential solver for investigation of propulsion performance of rigid and flexible oscillating foils

    , Article Ocean Engineering ; Volume 147 , 2018 , Pages 121-131 ; 00298018 (ISSN) Abbaspour, M ; Najafi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Heave and pitch motion of an oscillating airfoil in uniform flow will cause generation of forwarding thrust. Applying a combination of these two motions on flexible foil, one can increase thrust and therefore the efficiency. This is the way that most fishes and other flying animals uses to consume less energy. In this paper, hydrodynamic forces and efficiency of an oscillating airfoil is investigated. A code is developed based on potential flow formulation in combination with Time Stepping Method (TSM) with nonlinear free shear layer dynamic approach to predict the wake behind the lifting bodies. A linear Morino type Kutta condition has been implemented on panels adjacent to trailing edge....

Dynamic economic evaluation of distribution automation systems

, Article 2009 International Conference on Electric Power and Energy Conversion Systems, EPECS 2009 ; 2009 ; 9789948427155 (ISBN) Rahmani, S ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In a deregulated environment of power distribution industry, a comprehensive economic evaluation for the implementation of distribution automation (DA) systems is inevitable. Using the presented methodology in this paper and system dynamics approach, it is efficiently possible to deal with variation of the economic parameters such as the interest rate, inflation rate, energy supply cost, load growth, etc. In this paper, economic short-run and long-run impacts of DA systems are evaluated from utility point of view. Also economic benefits from customers' point of view are analyzed. A practical pricing strategy for maximizing the utility profit is suggested depending on the underlying market...
