    Abstract
Insulated rail joints (IRJs) are widely used in signaling and broken rail identification systems. Track deterioration adjacent to IRJ is frequent due to excessive dynamic forces generated at IRJs by the repetitive passage of the ongoing traffic. Hence, they exhibit low service life and are considered high-risk elements and maintained through high standards. With a view to increase operational speed and the annual operational throughput, many improved structural designs have been proposed, of which inclined IRJs are the focus of this paper. To compare noise, vibration, and adjacent sleepers' vertical displacement of square and 30° and 45° cut joints, a series of field tests have been carried...

An X-FEM implementation of hydro-fracture growth in naturally fractured saturated porous media

    , Article Poromechanics 2017 - Proceedings of the 6th Biot Conference on Poromechanics, 9 July 2017 through 13 July 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2027-2034 ; 9780784480779 (ISBN) Vahab, M ; Khoei, A. R ; Khalili, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is developed for the simulation of interaction between hydraulic fractures and natural discontinuities within saturated porous media. The momentum balance equation of the bulk together with the momentum balance and continuity equations of the fluid phase are employed to obtain the fully coupled set of governing equations. The hydro-fracture is modeled for fluid flow using the Darcy law. The natural discontinuity on the other hand is modeled for both opening and closing modes which induce fluid flow and/or contact behavior along the crack edges. The discontinuity in the displacement field is incorporated by using the Heaviside enrichment...

    , Article JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control ; Volume 19, Issue 14 , 2013 , Pages 2223-2240 ; 10775463 (ISSN) Mahmoudkhani, S ; Haddadpour, H ; Navazi, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Free vibrations and the transverse response of sandwich plates with viscoelastic cores under wide-band random excitation is studied with special attention to the so-called pumping, thickness-shear and stretching modes. The quadratic displacement field is adopted for all displacement components of the core to accurately capture the higher modes excited by the wide-band excitation. The Love-Kirchhoff plate theory is used for the face layers. The viscoelastic behavior of the core is modeled by the Golla-Hughes-McTavish method. An analytical solution using the normal mode method is provided for the simply supported boundary conditions by including a different family of modes. The effects of some...

Free-edge stresses in general cross-ply laminates

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 2 , April , 2014 , p. 387-402 Yazdani Sarvestani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Within elasticity theory, the reduced form of a displacement field is obtained for general cross-ply composite laminates subjected to a bending moment. The firstorder shear deformation theory of plates and Reddy's layerwise theory are then utilized to determine the global deformation parameters and the local deformation parameters appearing in the displacement fields, respectively. For a special set of boundary conditions an elasticity solution is developed to verify the validity and accuracy of the layerwise theory. Finally, various numerical results are presented within the layerwise theory for edge-effect problems of several cross-ply laminates under the bending moment. The results...

    Abstract
In this paper, the extended finite element method is presented for thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling of impermeable discontinuities in saturated porous media. The X-FEM technique is applied to the THM governing equations for the spatial discretization, followed by a generalized Newmark scheme for the time domain discretization. The displacement field is enriched by the Heaviside and crack tip asymptotic functions, and the pressure and temperature fields are enriched by the Heaviside and appropriate asymptotic functions. The process is accomplished by partitioning the domain with triangular sub-elements. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of proposed technique...

    Abstract
In this study, based on the reduced form of elasticity displacement field for a long laminate, an analytical method is established to exactly obtain the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of generally laminated composite plates subjects to extension, torsion, and bending. Reddy's layerwise theory is subsequently employed for analytical and numerical examinations of the boundary layer stresses within arbitrary laminated composite plates. Various numerical results are developed for the...

    Abstract
In this paper, strain gradient elasticity formulation for analysis of FG (functionally graded) micro-cylinders is presented. The material properties are assumed to obey a power law in radial direction. The governing differential equation is derived as a fourth order ODE. A power series solution for stresses and displacements in FG micro-cylinders subjected to internal and external pressures is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to study the effect of the characteristic length parameter and FG power index on the displacement field and stress distribution in FG cylinders. It is observed that the characteristic length parameter has a considerable effect on the stress distribution of FG...

Out-of-plane stresses in composite shell panels: Layerwise and elasticity solutions

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 220, Issue 1-4 , 2011 , Pages 15-32 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Miri, A. K ; Nosier, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Boundary-layer effects in lengthy cross-ply laminated circular cylindrical shell panels under uniform axial extension are investigated by two analytical solutions. First, Reddy's layerwise theory with state-space approach is utilized to determine the local interlaminar stresses. In this method, the general displacement field is discretized through the shell thickness by a linear shape function. When the shell panel is subjected to an axial force, the axial strain is estimated by an equivalent single-layer theory. Second, the stress-function approach along with Fourier series expansion is applied to develop a novel elasticity solution. The elasticity solution, which is based on simply-support...

A bending theory for beams with vertical edge crack

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 52, Issue 7 , July , 2010 , Pages 904-913 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Ebrahimi, A ; Behzad, M ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper a linear continuous theory for bending analysis of beams with an edge crack perpendicular to the neutral plane subject to bending has been developed. The model assumes that the displacement field is a superposition of the classical EulerBernoulli beam's displacement and of a displacement due to the crack. It is assumed that in bending the additional displacement due to crack decreases exponentially with distance from the crack tip. The strain and stress fields have been calculated using this displacement field and the bending equation has been obtained using equilibrium equations. Using a fracture mechanics approach the exponential decay rate has been calculated. There is a...

    Abstract
In this paper, an extended finite element method is employed to simulate the presence of discontinuities caused by the contact surface. In X-FEM, the need for mesh adaption to interface is neglected and the process is accomplished by partitioning the domain with some triangular sub-elements whose Gauss points are used for integration of the elements. The modified level set technique and the Heaviside enrichment function are employed to approximate the discontinuous displacement field of elements located on the contact surface. The penalty method is used to impose the contact constraints and establish the non-penetration condition. An efficient numerical algorithm is employed to model the...

    Abstract
Consider an arbitrarily oriented ellipsoidal domain near the interface of an isotropic bimaterial space. It is assumed that a general class of piecewise nonuniform dilatational eigenstrain field is distributed within the ellipsoidal domain. Two theorems relevant to prediction of the nature of the induced displacement field for the interior and exterior points of the ellipsoidal domain are stated and proved. As a resultant the exact analytical expression of the elastic fields are obtained rigorously. In this work a new Eshelby-like tensor, A is introduced. In particular, the closed-form expressions for A associated with the interior points of spherical and cylindrical inclusion are derived....

    Abstract
In this paper, vibration analysis of rotating laminated composite cylindrical shells using a combination of the layerwise theory and wave propagation approach is investigated. This combination enables us to study all the conventional boundary conditions in our analysis. Results obtained have been compared with those available in the literature and a good agreement has been observed. In contrast to the Equivalent Single Layer theories (ESL), the layerwise theory is constructed on the basis ofC°- continuity through the laminate thickness. For the surface of the shell, a displacement field based on the wave propagation approach is proposed. The effect of Coriolis and centrifugal accelerations...

The bending equation has been solved for a simply supported beam with rectangular cross-section and the results are compared with finite element and empirical results. There is an excellent agreement between theoretical results and those obtained by numerical and empirical methods. The model developed in this research is a simple and...

    Abstract
Rocks and rock-like materials frequently fail under compression due to the initiation, propagation and coalescence of the pre-existing microcracks. The mechanism of microcrack coalescence process in rock-like materials is experimentally and numerically investigated. The experimental study involves some uniaxial compression tests on rock-like specimens specially prepared from portland pozzolana cement, mica sheets and water. The microcrack coalescence is studied by scanning electron microscopy on some of the prepared thin specimens. It is assumed that the mica sheets play the role of microcracks within the specimens. Some analytical and numerical studies are also carried out to simulate the...

    Abstract
In this research, a functionally graded microbeam bonded with piezoelectric layers is analyzed under electric force. Static and dynamic instability due to the electric actuation is studied because of its importance in micro electro mechanical systems, especially in micro switches. In order to prevent pull-in instability, two piezoelectric layers are used as sensor and actuator. A current amplifier is used to supply input voltage of the actuator from the output of the sensor layer. Using Hamilton's principle and Euler-Bernoulli theory, equation of motion of the system is obtained. It is shown that the load type (distributed or concentrated) applied to the microbeam from the piezoelectric...

    Abstract
In this paper, a continuous model for flexural vibration of beams with an edge crack perpendicular to the neutral plane has been developed. The model assumes that the displacement field is a superposition of the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam's displacement and of a displacement due to the crack. The additional displacement is assumed to be a product between a function of time and an exponential function of space. The unknown functions and parameters are determined based on the zero stress conditions at the crack faces and the concept of J-integral from fracture mechanics. The governing equation of motion for the beam has been obtained using the Hamilton principle and solved using a modified...
