    , Article Chaos, Solitons and Fractals ; Volume 31, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 292-304 ; 09600779 (ISSN) Alasty, A ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In present paper, a feedback linearization control is applied to control a chaotic pendulum system. Tracking the desired periodic orbits such as period-one, period-two, and period-four orbits is efficiently achieved. Due to the presence of saturation in real world control signals, the stability of controller is investigated in presence of saturation and sufficient stability conditions are obtained. At first feedback linearization control law is designed, then to avoid the singularity condition, a saturating constraint is applied to the control signal. The stability conditions are obtained analytically. These conditions must be investigated for each specific case numerically. Simulation...

    Abstract
The paper presents the application of a rule- based control scheme for an Advanced Static Var Compensator (ASVC) to improve power system transient stability. The proposed method uses a current reference, based on the Transient Energy Function (TEF) approach. The proposed scheme provides, also, a continuous control of the reactive power flow. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with that of a system using a conventional control method and of a system without ASVC. A single-machine system and an IEEE three machine system are used to verify the performance of the proposed method. © Sharif University of Technology

Stability of linear dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel: A co-design approach

    , Article International Journal of Control ; Volume 88, Issue 12 , May , 2015 , Pages 2488-2498 ; 00207179 (ISSN) Farhadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2015
    Abstract
This paper is concerned with the stability of linear time-invariant dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel subject to minimum bit rate constraint when an encoder and a decoder are unaware of the control signal. This assumption results in co-designing the encoder, decoder and controller. The encoder, decoder, controller and conditions relating transmission rate to packet erasure probability and eigenvalues of the system matrix A are presented for almost sure asymptotic stability of linear time-invariant dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel with feedback acknowledgment. When the eigenvalues of the system matrix A are real valued, it is shown that the obtained condition for...

Robust stability and stabilization of LTI fractional order systems with polytopic and interval uncertainties

    , Article 2017 25th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2017, 2 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2253-2258 ; 9781509059638 (ISBN) Abooee, A ; Adelipour, S ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a novel representation of uncertain LTI fractional order systems based on the state-space model which contains both interval and polytopic uncertainties. First, a set of linear matrix inequalities, which are sufficient conditions, are presented for analyzing the robust stability of the mentioned systems. Then, some sufficient conditions are obtained for designing a feedback gain matrix to tackle the robust stabilization of the considered systems. Note that the concluded conditions of this paper are valid for fractional systems with a given constant derivative order α in 1 ≤ α < 2 and also, can be employed conservatively for α in 0 < α < 1. Finally, through two numerical...

Estimation and stability over AWGN channel in the presence of fading, noisy feedback channel and different sample rates

    , Article Systems and Control Letters ; Volume 123 , 2019 , Pages 75-84 ; 01676911 (ISSN) ; https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0167691118301993 Sanjaroon, V ; Farhadi, A ; Khalaj, B. H ; Motahari, A. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper is concerned with estimation and stability of control systems over communication links subject to limited capacity, power constraint, fading, noisy feedback, and different transmission rate rather than system sampling rate. A key issue addressed in this paper is that in the presence of noisy feedback associated with channel, which models transmission of finite number of bits over such links as is the case in most practical scenarios, the well-known eigenvalues rate condition is still a tight bound for stability. Based on an information theoretic analysis, necessary conditions are derived for stability of discrete-time linear control systems via the distant controller in the mean...

Application of particle swarm optimization in chaos synchronization in noisy environment in presence of unknown parameter uncertainty

    , Article Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation ; Volume 17, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 742-753 ; 10075704 (ISSN) Shirazi, M. J ; Vatankhah, R ; Boroushaki, M ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied to synchronize chaotic systems in presence of parameter uncertainties and measurement noise. Particle swarm optimization is an evolutionary algorithm which is introduced by Kennedy and Eberhart. This algorithm is inspired by birds flocking. Optimization algorithms can be applied to control by defining an appropriate cost function that guarantees stability of system. In presence of environment noise and parameter uncertainty, robustness plays a crucial role in succeed of controller. Since PSO needs only rudimentary information about the system, it can be a suitable algorithm for this case. Simulation results confirm that the proposed...

Welding current and arc voltage control in a GMAW process using ARMarkov based MPC

    , Article Control Engineering Practice ; Volume 19, Issue 12 , December , 2011 , Pages 1408-1422 ; 09670661 (ISSN) Mousavi Anzehaee, M ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A predictive functional controller based on ARMarkov model structure has been designed to control welding current and arc voltage in a GMAW process. The closed loop system performance is investigated through computer simulations and is compared by those achieved from implementing two commonly used controllers i.e. PI and feedback linearization based PID. The local stability of the closed loop system is analyzed in the presence of uncertainties in the linearized model of the process as well as the control parameters. Finally it is shown that the proposed controller performs like a PI controller along with a pre-filter compensator

BIBO stability of fractional delay systems in the parametric space of delays

    , Article International Conference on Control, Automation and Systems ; 2011 , Pages 1841-1845 ; 15987833 (ISSN) ; 9781457708350 (ISBN) Mesbahi, A ; Haeri, M ; Nasiri, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this work, a novel method is proposed to study the BIBO stability of a fractional delay system. The characteristic equation of a fractional delay system with some transcendental terms has infinitely many roots. Applying D-subdivision method and the Rekasius substitution divide one-dimensional parametric space of the time delay to infinite intervals with finite unstable roots. The number of unstable roots in each interval is calculated with the definition of root tendency on the boundary of each interval. Two illustrative examples are presented to confirm the proposed method results

    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2015
    Abstract
This paper is concerned with tracking state trajectory at remote controller, stability and performance of linear time-invariant noiseless dynamic systems with multiple observations over the packet erasure network subject to random packet dropout and transmission delay that does not necessarily use feedback channel full time. Three cases are considered in this paper: (1) without feedback channel, (2) with feedback channel intermittently and (3) with full time availability of feedback channel. For all three cases, coding strategies that result in reliable tracking of state trajectory at remote controller with asymptotically zero mean absolute estimation error are presented. Asymptotic mean...

Standing phase angle reduction based on a wide area monitoring system using genetic algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Emerging Electric Power Systems ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , Jul , 2010 ; 1553779X (ISSN) Nourizadeh, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Sadeghi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
During power system restoration, it is necessary to check the phase angle between two buses before closing circuit breakers to connect a line between them. A novel approach for reducing large standing phase angle (SPA) based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented in this paper. The proposed approach starts with a state estimation on Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) data measurements and considering power system operation and angular stability constraints, seeks an optimal control action scenario for reducing SPA. Since these constraints are evaluated based on WAMS data, the presented approach is considerably high speed and accurate. As an optimization problem, objective function of the...

Adaptive robust control of fractional-order swarm systems in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances

    , Article IET Control Theory and Applications ; Volume 12, Issue 7 , 2018 , Pages 961-969 ; 17518644 (ISSN) Naderi Soorki, M ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study investigates the asymptotic swarm stabilisation of fractional-order swarm systems in the presence of two different kinds of model uncertainties and external disturbances while the upper bound of the uncertainties is a linear function of pseudo-states norms with unknown coefficients. To this end, first a fractional-integral sliding manifold is constructed and then an adaptive-robust sliding mode controller is designed to guarantee the asymptotic swarm stability in a fractional-order linear time-invariant swarm system. The stability analysis of the proposed control system is done based on the Lyapunov stability theorem. Using the proposed controller, the coefficients of the upper...

    Abstract
This work deals with the robust D-stability test of linear time-invariant ( LTI ) general fractional order control systems in a closed loop where the system and - or the controller may be of fractional order. The concept of general implies that the characteristic equation of the LTI closed loop control system may be of both commensurate and non-commensurate orders, both the coefficients and the orders of the characteristic equation may be nonlinear functions of uncertain parameters, and the coefficients may be complex numbers. Some new specific areas for the roots of the characteristic equation are found so that they reduce the computational burden of testing the robust D-stability. Based on...

    Abstract
This paper presents an analytical study of swarm motion in static environments, in which, motion of the swarm is modeled as a quasi static model. Motion of each member is being affected by interactive forces and environmental effects. Interactive effects on each member could be attractive or repulsive due to being far from or close to other members respectively. Environmental effects also could be attractive or repulsive or a combination of both. The method is based on Lyapunov analysis. Two objectives are investigated through the analysis; one is to preserve the unity of swarm i.e. not losing any member through motion, and the other is to move toward attractant areas and away from repellant...

    Abstract
In this paper, by introducing a new general state-space form for uncertain linear time-invariant fractional-order systems subjected to interval and polytopic uncertainties, two problems including robust stability analysis and robust stabilization of the presented systems are investigated. Subsequently, two sufficient conditions in terms of several linear matrix inequalities for the problems mentioned are concluded as two separate theorems. It is assumed that the fractional order α is a known constant belonging to 0 < α < 1. Simulation results of two different numerical examples demonstrate that the provided sufficient conditions are applicable and effective for tackling robust stability and...

    Abstract
Presented is a novel approach for designing continuous-time update laws to update the parameters of stabilising controllers during continuous phases of bipedal walking such that (i) a general cost function, such as the energy of the control input over single support, can be minimised in an online manner, and (ii) the exponential stability of the corresponding limit cycle for the closed-loop impulsive system is not affected. Formally, a class of update laws with a radial basis step length is developed to minimise a cost function in terms of the stabilising controller parameters and initial states of the mechanical system

Adaptive control of robot manipulators including actuator dynamics and without joint torque measurement

    Abstract
Ignoring actuator dynamics in control of rigid manipulators can in practice result in performance degradation or loss of system stability. However, consideration of actuator dynamics usually requires measurement of robot joint torques. This paper addresses motion tracking control of an n-DOF rigid robot by taking into account its actuator dynamics. Joint torque measurement is avoided by using an adaptive observer. The backstepping technique is adopted to develop a dynamically smooth adaptive nonlinear controller dealing with uncertainties in manipulator and actuator dynamics. Semi-global convergence of motion tracking errors as well as torque estimation error are proven without any...

Multivariable servomechanism controller for autonomous operation of a distributed generation unit: design and performance evaluation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 853-865 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Karimi, H ; Davison, E. J ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A linear time-invariant (LTI) robust servomechanism controller for islanded (autonomous) operation of a distributed generation (DG) unit and its local load is proposed. The DG unit utilizes a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) as the interface medium. The controller design is obtained by introducing a new optimal controller design procedure, in conjunction with a proposed non-conservative robustness constraint. The proposed controller utilizes 1) an internal oscillator for frequency control and 2) a robust servomechanism controller (RSC) to regulate the island voltage. Despite uncertainty of the load parameters, the proposed controller guarantees robust stability and pre-specified performance...

    Abstract
Design of a classical controller is based on output feedback and structure of the controller. From modern control point of view, the information of input signals, output signals and internal behavior of the system are presented in state space model. In this paper, modern control is used to increase small-disturbance stability of power systems. Although many of existing power plants prefer to use classical Power System Stabilizers (PSS), these controllers have their own problems. Digital implementation of modern controllers is considered as a good advantage of modern PSS. In this paper, a modern control based PSS is designed for Bistun power plant and its output results are compared to the...
