    Abstract
In recent years, the autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) has been widely used in the building construction industry, especially for construction of infill walls. However, the AAC suffers from several drawbacks such as low compressive and tensile strength, high water absorption as well as insufficient resistance against impacts. To address such issues, this study evaluates the mechanical properties of the AAC blocks in which, the cement has been replaced with nano-graphene. For this purpose, various replacement ratios (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8) were selected and different tests such as compressive and tensile strength (cylindrical specimens with the size of 10 × 20 cm), impact resistance and water...

Green high strength concrete containing recycled waste ceramic aggregates and waste carpet fibers: Mechanical, durability, and microstructural properties

    , Article Journal of Building Engineering ; Volume 26 , 2019 ; 23527102 (ISSN) Zareei, S. A ; Ameri, F ; Bahrami, N ; Shoaei, P ; Musaeei, H. R ; Nurian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
This paper investigated the combined utilization of recycled waste ceramic aggregate (RWCA) and waste carpet fibers (WCFs) in high strength concrete (HSC). Concrete mixes containing different percentages of RWCA including 20%, 40%, 60% (by weight) as partial replacement of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) were prepared. To enhance the tensile and flexural strength of concrete, 1.0% (by volume) WCF was added to the mixes. The slump and density of the fresh concrete were evaluated, both of which demonstrated a decreasing trend with incorporation of RWCA and WCF. With regard to the hardened concrete, replacing 40% of NCA with RWCA led to the optimum mechanical properties and increased the...

Durability of glass-fibre-reinforced polymer composites under seawater and sea-sand concrete coupled with harsh outdoor environments

    Abstract
This article presents an investigation on the durability of different glass-fibre-reinforced polymer composites when subjected to harsh outdoor conditions, including freeze/thaw cycles, ultraviolet radiation and moisture, as well as when used with seawater sea-sand concrete for construction applications. To achieve this, the effects of a number of parameters, including the environment of exposure, exposure time, profile cross-sectional configuration and orientation of fibres, on the mechanical properties of different glass-fibre-reinforced polymer composites were studied. To investigate the degradation of the mechanical properties, three-point bending, compression and tension tests were...

Properties of concrete containing Guar gum

, Article European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering ; 2020 Radvand, T ; Toufigh, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This study explores the effect of Guar gum as an eco-friendly additive on concrete mechanical characteristics. In the first stage, the slump and relative humidity tests were carried out for the fresh mortar, and tensile and compressive strengths were then determined for fifteen different mixture designs with two different curing times. Further, an exponential correlation was obtained between the ultrasonic pulse velocity and the compression test results. Additionally, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to assess the bond between aggregates and Guar gum. At last, the Taguchi method and ANOVA were utilized to conduct the optimum states of the mechanical characteristics of the...
