Parents’ decision on child labour and school attendance: evidence from Iranian households

    , Article Journal of Education and Work ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 612-631 ; 13639080 (ISSN) Keshavarz Haddad, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the framework of a household’s collective decision processes, this study presents a structural empirical model to test the hypothesis that child labour is compelled by household’s poverty and parent’s bargaining power against one another. To this end, a measure for mother’s intra-household bargaining power is developed. I use Iranian Household’s Income and Expenditures Surveys (2005 and 2010). Estimation method used in this study is multinomial logit. Findings indicate that household’s poverty is not the sole cause of child’s work incidence. Instead, given the other factors such as poverty, being the first born, local labour market prospect and gender fixed, mother’s bargaining power is...

Design and realization of a sign language educational humanoid robot

    , Article Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems: Theory and Applications ; 2018 , Pages 1-15 ; 09210296 (ISSN) Meghdari, A ; Alemi, M ; Zakipour, M ; Kashanian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel robotic platform, called RASA (Robot Assistant for Social Aims). This educational social robot is designed and constructed to facilitate teaching Persian Sign Language (PSL) to children with hearing disabilities. There are three predominant characteristics from which design guidelines of the robot are generated. First, the robot is designed as a fully functional interactive social robot with children as its social service recipients. Second, it comes with the ability to perform PSL, which demands a dexterous upper-body of 29 actuated degrees of freedom. Third, it has a relatively low development cost for a robot in its category. This funded project, addresses...

    Abstract
Robotic blimps have a wide range of applications, such as monitoring activities in their surroundings, advertising, and performing on stages. They also have remarkable capacities to be used as a social robot. In this research, a manually operated social robotic blimp has been developed intending to interact with children as a social agent and attract adults’ attention as an entertainer in indoor public environments. Since the appearance of a social robot has a significant impact on its acceptance, first, we acquired opinions of several participants on the shape of a desired floating robot. The results revealed that a simple spherical structure adequately draws people’s attention. After...

    Abstract
Background: Wolfram syndrome (WFS) is characterized by deafness, diabetes mellitus, and diabetes insipidus along with optic atrophy. WFS has an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance and is due to variants in WFS1 and CISD2. Methods: We evaluated the underlying molecular etiology of three affected members of a consanguineous family with hearing impairment, bicuspid aortic valve, diabetes mellitus and insipidus, clinodactyly, and gastrointestinal tract abnormalities via exome sequencing approach. We correlated clinical and imaging data with the genetic findings and their associated phenotypes. Results: We identified a homozygous missense variant p.(Asn1097Lys) in CDK13, a gene previously...

    Abstract
The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1–4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5–8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhood...

    Abstract
Since 2000, many countries have achieved considerable success in improving child survival, but localized progress remains unclear. To inform efforts towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2—to end preventable child deaths by 2030—we need consistently estimated data at the subnational level regarding child mortality rates and trends. Here we quantified, for the period 2000–2017, the subnational variation in mortality rates and number of deaths of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age within 99 low- and middle-income countries using a geostatistical survival model. We estimated that 32% of children under 5 in these countries lived in districts that had attained...

    Abstract
Background: Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Methods: 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Spatiotemporal...

    Abstract
Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a form of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoea that has the potential to drastically reduce child mortality; yet, according to UNICEF estimates, less than half of children younger than 5 years with diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) received ORS in 2016. A variety of recommended home fluids (RHF) exist as alternative forms of ORT; however, it is unclear whether RHF prevent child mortality. Previous studies have shown considerable variation between countries in ORS and RHF use, but subnational variation is unknown. This study aims to produce high-resolution geospatial estimates of relative and absolute coverage of...

Parents Bargaining Power and Child’s Time Allocation in Iranian Households

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ojaghi, Shahla (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research intends to analysis the determinants of child work and schooling in Iran. To do this we use the Household’s Income and Expenditure survey of Iran in 2009. There are two competing theoretical base of household’s time allocation, the unitary and collective bargaining decision approaches. We use the later to consider the differences in preferences of parents toward the child’s time allocation. Making use of Bivariate Probit and Tobit, we examined the effects of parents’ bargaining power and child’s birth order on his/her schooling and work decision. Our finding, confirm that, mother’s bargaining power has negative association with the work participation of her son and daughter but...

Agricultural Income Shocks and Daily Work Hours of Child Labor in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shakerdargah, Ali (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor) ; Fatemi Ardestani, Farshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Empirical finding and evidence asserts that families, in response to income shock, allegedly use their children as income sources and have them to participate in the labor market. By making use of Propensity Score Matching and Heckman Two Steps models and exogenous agricultural income shocks, we examine the hypothesis for the families in the rural areas of Iran. We use the Households' Income and Expenditures Survey of Iran for two consequent years of 1393 (2014) and 1394 (2015). The working sample is restricted to households with children aged between 10-17 years old. Our findings show that the outcome of interest, daily work hours, is not significantly affected by the exogenous shocks of...

Child-Home Interaction: Usability Evaluation of Game-based End-user Programming for Children

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kakavand, Zahra (Author) ; Nazari Shirehjini, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the challenges in the field of Ambient Intelligence is empowering end-user to determine the level of system interference in the control of the environment. One approach to answer to this challenge is using End-user Development to determine the rate of system intelligence as well as develop the behavior of the system by the user himself. In this way, the user introduces his intended behavior to the system so that the system operates in accordance with it.In this research, we have provided end-user development for an intelligent environment considering children as the end-user; for this purpose, we have designed a game-based user interface, allowing children to be involved in the...

The Impact of Climate Shock on Child Labor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lari, Hanie (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Precipitation in the water year 1396-1397 is the lowest in the past decade. The present study is conducted during this water year and focuses on the effects of climate variables such as temperature and precipitation on child labor supply between Tir 1397 and Farvardin 1398. Children and household characteristics are also taken into account when evaluating child labor supply using OLS and Logit methods. Estimation results indicate that both child work hours and participation in the job market decline with an increase in precipitation. Furthermore, how much time children spend working or studying is heavily influenced by parents' income. The temperature variable does not have a significant...

P 134 – Absence of the patella has minimal effects on sagittal plane gait parameters

    , Article Gait and Posture ; Volume 65 , 2018 , Pages 462-464 ; 09666362 (ISSN) Baghdadi, S ; Khandan, A ; Arab Baniasad, M ; Darbandi, H ; Vafaei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Patella is the latest addition to the animal's skeleton. It's role in normal walking has not been clearly defined. A 9-year-old girl with congenital absence of the patella was assessed using instrumented gait analysis. The results show a tendency for the limb for external rotation, which is more pronounced during swing. We suggest that the role of the patella is mainly to redirect the force of the quadriceps tendon medially. The classically described role, which is to increase the lever arm of the quadriceps tendon, was not confirmed in this study. © 2018 Elsevier B.V

    Abstract
A double burden of malnutrition occurs when individuals, household members or communities experience both undernutrition and overweight. Here, we show geospatial estimates of overweight and wasting prevalence among children under 5 years of age in 105 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) from 2000 to 2017 and aggregate these to policy-relevant administrative units. Wasting decreased overall across LMICs between 2000 and 2017, from 8.4% (62.3 (55.1–70.8) million) to 6.4% (58.3 (47.6–70.7) million), but is predicted to remain above the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target of <5% in over half of LMICs by 2025. Prevalence of overweight increased from 5.2% (30 (22.8–38.5)...

    Abstract
Automatic detection of epileptic seizures can serve as a valuable clinical tool which involves a more objective and computationally efficient method for the analysis of EEG data in order to generate increasingly accurate and reliable results. Automatic seizure detection is also an important component of closed-loop responsive cortical stimulation systems. The goal of this study is to evaluate EEG-based features recently proposed for seizure detection to discover the optimum ones for a reliable seizure detection system. We extracted seizure detection features from intracranial EEG signals that were recorded during invasive pre-surgical epilepsy monitoring of people with drug resistant focal...

    Abstract
Background: Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods: For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific,...

    Abstract
Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive encephalopathy before, dur-ing, or after childbirth with almost the most common type, i.e. spastic diplegic, leading to a frequent walking problem, In-toeing. Orthoses can reduce the consequences of CP. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of combining twister wrap orthoses (TWO) with high-top shoes on the balance parameters of children with spastic diplegic CP. Material and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, twenty children (aged 6.8 ± 0.5 years) with spastic diplegic CP with in-toeing gait participated. The tests were conducted in three conditions: 1) in bare-foot, 2) with high-top shoes, and 3) with high-top shoes...

The Effect of Wages on the Intensity of Child Labor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Damankeshan, Atefeh (Author) ; Keshavarz Hadad, Gholamreza (Supervisor) ; Fatemi Ardestani, Farshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the intensity of child labor has been investigated by modeling household behavior in a framework of collective decision-making on resource allocation, and for this purpose, a household utility maximization problem has been used in which child’s and parents’ wages, non-working incomes, education level for bargaining power as well as several variables at the social level such as unemployment rate, divorce rate and Gini coefficient have been used to reflect labor market conditions. In this study, the structure of equations for girls and boys in urban and rural areas has been estimated by using raw household budget data for 2015 in Iran and multivariate Tobit technique. Findings...

    Abstract
Several studies have investigated road traffic deaths, but few have compared by road user type. Iran, with an estimated 44 road traffic deaths per 100,000 population in 2002 had higher road traffic deaths than any other country for which reliable estimates can be made. So, the present study was conducted on road death data and identified fatal accident distribution by age, gender and head injury as well as the influences of age and gender on deaths at accident scenes for all road user groups. Data used in this study are on fatal road accidents recorded by forensic medicine experts of the Khorasan Razavi province in Mashhad, the capital of the province, the second largest city and the largest...
