    Abstract
Diffuse reflectance near-infrared (NIR) data (908–1676 nm) of chicken breast fillets was recorded in a non-destructive way using a portable miniaturised NIR spectrometer. The NIR data was used to discriminate between fresh and thawed breast fillets and to determine the birds’ growth conditions. NIR data was recorded of 153 commercial supermarket chicken fillet samples by applying the NIR device equipped with the standard issue collar on the samples in three different ways: (i) directly on the meat (ii) through the top foil of the package (i.e. with an air pocket between the foil and the breast fillet), and (iii) through the top foil with the packaging turned bottom up (i.e. no air pocket...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khatibi, Maryam (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Larimi, Afsaneh Sadat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this project is to investigate and synthesize CaO-based nanocatalysts derived from chicken eggshell calcination with alkali metals and sodium-potassium compounds promoters used in the transesterification reaction of canola oil and methanol. Sections of this thesis include the synthesis of nanocatalysts, catalyst characterization tests, and investigation of reaction under optimal conditions. Two groups of catalysts containing different weight percentages of alkali metals based on CaO and 1 %wt sodium-potassium based on CaO with different weight percentages of these two elements were synthesized by wet impregnation method and used in the reaction under optimum condition. Catalyst...

Amyloid fibril reduction through covalently modified lysine in HEWL and insulin

    Abstract
Proteins possess a variety of nucleophiles, which can carry out different reactions in the functioning cells. Proteins endogenously and synthetically can be modified through their nucleophilic sites. The roles of these chemical modifications have not been completely revealed. These modifications can alter the protein folding process. Protein folding directly affects the function of proteins. If an error in protein folding occurs, it may cause protein malfunction leading to several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In this study, Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) and bovine insulin, as model proteins for studying the amyloid formation, were covalently attached with...

    Abstract
Miniaturized systems based on the principles of microfluidics are widely used in various fields, such as biochemical and biomedical applications. Systematic design processes are demanded the proper use of these microfluidic devices based on mathematical simulations. Aggregated proteins (e.g., inclusion bodies) in solution with chaotropic agents (such as urea) at high concentration in combination with reducing agents are denatured. Refolding methods to achieve the native proteins from inclusion bodies of recombinant protein relying on denaturant dilution or dialysis approaches for suppressing protein aggregation is very important in the industrial field. In this paper, a modeling approach is...

Discovery of a tetracyclic indole alkaloid that postpones fibrillation of hen egg white lysozyme protein

    Abstract
Protein aggregation, such as amyloid fibril formation, is molecular hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Prion disease. Indole alkaloids are well-known as the compounds having the ability to inhibit protein fibrillation. In this study, we experimentally and computationally have investigated the anti-amyloid property of a derivative of a synthesized tetracyclic indole alkaloid (TCIA), possessing capable functional groups. The fibrillation reaction of Hen White Egg Lysozyme (HEWL) was performed in absence and presence of the indole alkaloid. For quantitative analysis, we used Thioflovin T binding assay which showed ~50% reduction in fibril...

Performance evaluation of masonry buildings using a probabilistic approach

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 15, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 295-307 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Bakhshi, A ; Karimi, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In many countries, there are traditional houses made of stone, adobe and brick, which perform relatively weakly in earthquakes. To mitigate casualties in future earthquakes, it is necessary to evaluate the current status of these buildings and propose effective methods to retrofit them. One method of evaluating the performance of buildings in earthquakes is through the use of fragility curves. These diagrams show the probability of exceeding a specific state of damage versus seismic intensity parameters, such as PGA, MMI, la, CAV etc. Fragility curves will provide an important basis for analytical methods, based on probabilistic approaches. Much work has been done on bridges, concrete and...

Optical flow-based motion estimation of ultrasonic images for force estimation in percutaneous procedures: Theory and experimental validation

    , Article IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference), 25 October 2012 through 28 October 2012 ; October , 2012 , Pages 1557-1560 ; 9781467324212 (ISBN) Maghsoudi, A ; Jahed, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In recent years, there hass been a pronounced emphasis on percutaneous needle steering with the aid of advanced soft tissue modeling techniques. In this work an optical flow based motion estimation method is used to estimate the force applied to the needle by the soft tissue during percutaneous applications. The study considers Finite Element Model (FEM) of the tissue evaluated by the deformation data acquired through the optical flow method. To represent the soft tissue behavior, dynamic FEM with Rayleigh damping and viscoelastic models are used. The method is validated experimentally through offline evaluation of the ultrasonic images of the chicken breast punctured by a needle. The force...

    Abstract
A variable air volume (VAV) air handling system can significantly reduce fan power under partial load conditions. The focus of this study is developing a modeling program to predict the potential energy saving by the secondary HVAC system strategies. Comprehensive steady-state models are established to describe the energy performance of different control strategies for secondary HVAC systems. With building loads, minimum fresh air flow rate, pressure losses, supply air temperature control, dampers control and coil characteristic as inputs, the objectives were to develop a simulation model to evaluate performance of an air handling system. The potential energy savings of constant air volume...

Determination of spermine and spermidine in meat with a ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe and a combinational logic gate

    , Article Food Chemistry ; Volume 384 , 2022 ; 03088146 (ISSN) Abbasi-Moayed, S ; Bigdeli, A ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
A ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe is developed with a wide color variation for visual determination of spermine (SP) and spermidine (SD) in meat samples. The green emission provided from the combination of yellow emissive quantum dots and blue emissive carbon dots turns into pink when SP or SD are present. The results show that the developed sensor has good linearity in the range of 0.5–10 and 0.5–80 µM for SP and SD and suitable detection limits were achieved including 0.2 and 2.1 µM for SP and SD. The probe was highly selective in the presence of amino acids and other biogenic amines. RGB indices were extracted to build a combinational logic gate for visual and simultaneous detection of...
