    , Article Nanomedicine-nanotechnology Biology and Medicine - NaoMed- NanoTechnol- Biol Med ; 2011, Vol. 7, No. 1, PP. 22-39 Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Tamjid, E ; Pishbin, F ; Boccaccini, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This review covers the most recent developments of inorganic and organic-inorganic composite coatings for orthopedic implants, providing the interface with living tissue and with potential for drug delivery to combat infections. Conventional systemic delivery of drugs is an inefficient procedure that may cause toxicity and may require a patient's hospitalization for monitoring. Local delivery of antibiotics and other bioactive molecules maximizes their effect where they are required, reduces potential systemic toxicity and increases timeliness and cost efficiency. In addition, local delivery has broad applications in combating infection-related diseases. Polymeric coatings may present some...

    Abstract
In this work, an attempt was made to improve the distribution of CNTs in CNT/alumina nanocomposites. The composite powders containing 1 and 3vol% of CNTs were produced and calcined at 500°C for 2h. Surface coating with boehmite nanoparticles was used to improve CNT distribution in alumina matrix. Calcined powders were shaped into compacted samples by cold isostatic pressing at 180MPa and sintered at 1600°C for 2h in flowing gas atmosphere (95%Ar+5%H2). Phase analysis of the calcined composite powders showed complete transformation of boehmite into gamma-alumina. The maximum flexural strength was 465±31MPa corresponding to addition of 1vol% CNTs. Evaluating the fracture toughness via DCM...

    Abstract
In this study the effects of HfB2 addition were investigated on the sintering behavior, densification and microstructure of ZrB2-SiC in the presence of B4C and MoSi2 as a sintering catalyst. 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt% of HfB2 was substituted with ZrB2 in ultra-high temperature ceramic composites of ZrB2-SiC. Additionally, the effect of using nano-scale against common micron size SiC was compared. All compositions were sintered for 1 h in 2100 °C and 2150 °C. Relative and bulk density and open porosity percentage of samples were calculated by Archimedes method. Dimensional changes of pellets and their weight reduction after pyrolysis and sintering proved that increasing of HfB2 leads to increasing...

    Abstract
Al2O3-SiC composite ceramics were prepared by pressureless sintering with and without the addition of MgO, TiO2 and Y2O3 as sintering aids. The effects of these compositional variables on final density and hardness were investigated. In the present article at first α-Al2O3 and β-SiC nano powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method separately by using AlCl 3, TEOS and saccharose as precursors. Pressureless sintering was carried out in nitrogen atmosphere at 1600 °C and 1630 °C. The addition of 5 vol.% SiC to Al2O3 hindered densification. In contrast, the addition of nano MgO and nano TiO2 to Al 2O3-5 vol.% SiC composites improved densification but Y2O3 did not have positive effect on...

A molecular dynamics study of bond strength and interface conditions in the Al / Al 2 O 3 metal-ceramic composites

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 109 , November , 2015 , Pages 200-208 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Sazgar, A ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Mahnama, M ; Sohrabpour, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract High ductility of metals as well as high strength of ceramics has made the metal/ceramic composites an attractive material for many applications requiring high strength to weight ratios. An important issue in using this material is the behavior of the material and its ceramic-metal interface under various loading, especially at high strain rate. To provide a better understanding of the interface conditions, in this work, a molecular dynamics study of the interface behavior in Al/α-Al2O3 composite as the result of tensile and shear loadings is presented. For this purpose, the reactive force field (ReaxFF) potential function is utilized. The effects of...

Residual stresses in autofrettaged vessel made of functionally graded material

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 31, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 2930-2935 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Haghpanah Jahromi, B ; Farrahi, G. H ; Maleki, M ; Nayeb Hashemi, H ; Vaziri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We used an extension of the Variable Material Property method for materials with varying elastic and plastic properties to evaluate the residual stresses in an autofrettaged thick vessel made of functionally graded metal-ceramic composite. It is shown that the reinforcement of the metal vessel by ceramic particles, with an increasing ceramic volume fraction from inner to outer radius, increases the magnitude of compressive residual stresses at the inner section of an autofrettaged vessel and thus, could lead to better fatigue life and load-carrying capacity of the vessel. A parametric study is carried out to highlight the role of ceramic particle strength and spatial distribution, as well as...

    Abstract
Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a bioresorbable and biocompatible polymer that has been widely used in long-term implants and controlled drug release applications. However, when it comes to tissue engineering, PCL suffers from some shortcomings such as slow degradation rate, poor mechanical properties, and low cell adhesion. The incorporation of calcium phosphate-based ceramics and bioactive glasses into PCL has yielded a class of hybrid biomaterials with remarkably improved mechanical properties, controllable degradation rates, and enhanced bioactivity that are suitable for bone tissue engineering. This review presents a comprehensive study on recent advances in the fabrication and properties of...

    Abstract
Titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide was employed as a metal oxide sol-gel precursor to prepare ceramic composite nanofibers by the electrospinning system. To facilitate this process and obtain the desired nanofibers with higher aspect ratios and surface area, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) was added to the sol of titania. Four ceramic nanofibers sheets based on titania were prepared while each sheet contained different transition metals such as Fe-Mn, Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, and Fe-Mn-Co-Ni. The scanning electron microscope images showed good homogeneity for all the prepared ceramic composites with a diameter range of 100-250 nm. The sorption efficiency was investigated by a micro-solid-phase extraction setup in...
