    Abstract
Present work illustrated that the performance of ultrafine silica (Si) particles was improved considerably by rational hybridization with nanodiamond (ND). For this, Si@ND hybrid particles synthesized by chemical hybridization were incorporated into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) up to 10 phr. Scanning electron microscopy revealed coarse flower-like clusters for Si@ND nanohybrids, while Si exhibited rigid agglomerates in SBR. Comparing with physical hybrid (Si&ND) and single Si particles, it was revealed that chemical hybrids synergistically improved tensile properties, like 100% and 135% improvements in tensile strength and elongation at break, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis of...

    Abstract
In this research, bitumen from seven Iranian bitumen production plants were tested and characterized according to the Superpave performance grading (PG) system. The study compared the results of this classification with the 13 performance grade binders required for specific climatic zones in Iran. A set of modifiers, as well as laboratory air blowing, were used to generate the required PG binders. The modifiers used were crumb rubber, gilsonite, polyphosphoric acid, and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). It was found that the variety of available binders is not adequate to fully cover the required PGs. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
In this research, Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) test was conducted on several asphalt binders modified by different percentages of gilsonite and Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) polymer. Asphalt mixtures were also made from some of the study binders and tested for fatigue resistance using Four-point Bending Beam (FBB) fatigue test. The results showed that a strong correlation exists between LAS and FBB rankings at all the tested strain levels. Also, SHRP binder fatigue index (G∗sinδ), as a traditional binder fatigue index, was evaluated which did not show a strong correlation with either LAS or FBB tests. It was concluded that LAS test seems to be an effective binder fatigue test in predicting...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alaei, Yasaman (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Seyed Reyhani, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polycarbonate (PC) is known as one of the engineering plastics with remarkable mechanical properties, but the application of this polymer is limited due to its high notch sensitivity. Blending polycarbonate with other polymers such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a method to resolve this disadvantage. PC/ABS blends are commonly used in automotive industry, electrical and electronic devices. As PC and ABS are not completely miscible, a variety of compatibilizers are used to achieve a suitable microstructure and high engineering properties. Considering crucial applications of PC/ABS blends, different flame retardants are also used to reduce the flammability. These flame retardants...

    Abstract
Hybrid nanoparticle comprising of nanosilica (NS) and nanodiamond (ND), as denoted by ND@NS, was synthesized by a two-step chemistry route and then incorporated into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at low concentrations up to 5 phr by a two-roll mill. Physical hybrids of NS and ND, i.e., ND&NS, with a weight ratio similar to chemical hybrid (80:20 for NS:ND), were also incorporated into SBR. Field emission scanning electron microscopy observations revealed very fine dispersion of nanoparticles in the case of physical hybrids (ND&NS); whereas, agglomerations and aggregation of nanoparticles were evidenced for ND@NS. Tensile and dynamic mechanical analyses exhibited a higher reinforcing effect...

Effect of rubber component on the performance of brake friction materials

    , Article Wear ; Volume 274-275 , January , 2012 , Pages 286-297 ; 00431648 (ISSN) Saffar, A ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Various composite friction materials containing 40. vol.% organic binder (phenolic resin plus styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR)) with varying phenolic-resin/SBR ratio were prepared. The content of phenolic resin in each composite was indicated by the resin value (RV) index ranging between 0 and 100%. The composites with RVs greater than 50% form resin-based friction materials in which the primary binder is the phenolic resin. For RVs less than 50%, the composites become the rubber-based materials where the primary binder is the SBR. The analysis of mechanical properties exhibited that the conformability of the composites increases upon incorporation of SBR. The frictional analysis revealed that...

High-performance styrene-butadiene rubber nanocomposites based on carbon nanotube/nanodiamond hybrid with synergistic thermal conduction characteristics and electrically insulating properties

    , Article Polymer ; Volume 196 , 20 May , 2020 Jafarpour, E ; Shojaei, A ; Ahmadijokani, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reinforcement of rubbery materials with carbon nanotube (CNT) has gained much attention over the last few decades due to the inherent ability of CNT to improve the physical and mechanical properties of polymer composites. However, CNT renders electrical conductivity to the rubber composites, which could be problematic for a number of applications. In an attempt to overcome such issues, we controlled the insulating properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites by hybridization of CNT with nanodiamond (ND) particles without scarifying desirable features of the nanoparticles. In this respect, the effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanodiamond (ND), either individually or in...

In experimental section in addition to CNTs, two different grades of CBs, i.e. N330 and super conductive...

Effect of Carbon Nanoparticle Hybrid on the Properties of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafarpour, Erfan (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Flexible polymers (elastomers) are especially suitable for dynamic applications, and carbon fillers are well-known filler for elastomers. These are widely used in elastomer matrices for various commercial applications. Some of carbon nano fillers like Nano Diamond cannot impart such high degree of reinforcement to polymer matrices mainly because of improper filler dispersion and lack of strong filler-polymer interaction. In this effort, we examine the effects of two different nanostructured carbons when they are incorporated in a rubber matric in terms of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. Different ingredients and hybrid nanofillers were added to matric by...

    Abstract
This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties and performance of cold recycled asphalt mixtures (CRM). So far, several methods have been proposed for designing CRMs, which are mostly based on the volumetric and mechanical properties of the mixtures. In the meantime, few researches have considered performance of those mixes. The main approach of current research is to evaluate and enhance performance characteristics of CRMs regarding common distresses including early-raveling, moisture damage, fatigue cracking by an appropriate additive.Raveling and Cantabro tests were employed to evaluate the resistance of CRM against abrasion and semicircular bending test (SCB) and crack tolerate...

Performance Evaluation of Re-aged Rejuvenated (SBS and CR) Modified Asphalt Binders

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Farrokhzadeh, Farhad (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor) ; Sabouri, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, the use of modifiers has been one of the common methods on major roads to inhibit cracking and permanent deformation in asphalt pavements. Simultaneously, due to the economic and environmental benefits of hot mix asphalt recycling, the consumption of recycled asphalt pavement on all types of roads has been on the rise. However, a significant issue with recycled asphalt mixtures is their susceptibility to various types of cracking, as a result of the increased stiffness and brittleness of the recycled asphalt binders. To address this issue, two main questions need to be answered; a) the potential positive effects of modifiers left in the recycled mixture to be accounted for...

    Abstract
Low structure carbon black (CBN330), conductive high structure carbon black (CBXE2B) and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were loaded into the blend of natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) at different contents up to 10 phr. Kraus plots showed that all the reinforcements interact with NR/SBR blend appropriately. However, the CBXE2B whose interfacial area is the highest showed greatest value of Kraus interaction parameter. Flory-Rhener model and effective torque value revealed that all of the reinforcements enhanced the crosslink density, among them CBXE2B showed the highest impact and MWCNT placed in the second rank. It was also shown that the cure kinetic...
