A method for performance analysis of earliest-deadline-first scheduling policy

    , Article 2004 International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks, Florence, 28 June 2004 through 1 July 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 826-834 Kargahi, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the fraction of jobs that miss their deadlines in a real-time system when earliest-deadline-first scheduling policy (EDF) is used. In the system, jobs either all have deadlines until the beginning of service or deadlines until the end of service. In the former case, EDF is known to be optimal and, in the latter case, it will be optimal if preemption is allowed. In both cases, the system is modeled by an M/M/1/EDF+M queue, i.e., a single server queue with Poisson arrival, and service times and customer impatience, which are exponentially distributed. The optimality property of EDF is used for the estimation of a key parameter, γn...

Intelligent timetable evaluation using fuzzy AHP

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 38, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 3718-3723 ; 09574174 (ISSN) Isaai, M. T ; Kanani, A ; Tootoonchi, M ; Afzali, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
There is a substantial body of empirical literature that establishes the benefits of customer satisfaction for enterprises. Among different available options to present our service, selecting the best choice in the customers' eyes is a vital decision. Developing appropriate passenger train schedules is counted as one of the major managerial concerns in transportation environment. Although different algorithms have been developed to create predictive schedules for a fleet of passenger trains using different performance indicators, selecting the best one embraces some ambiguities and uncertainties. That is because a one-dimensional objective function may not be sufficient for responding...

Extension of depth of field using amplitude modulation of the pupil function for bio-imaging

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 6 April 2010 through 8 April 2010 ; Volume 7690 , May , 2010 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819481542 (ISBN) Kavehvash, Z ; Bagheri, S ; Mehrany, K ; Javidi, B ; Sanchez, E ; Martinez Corral, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper we present a novel approach to generate images of extended depth of field (DOF) without compromising the lateral resolution to support realization of three-dimensional imaging systems such as integral imaging. In our approach in extending DOF, we take advantage of the spatial frequency spectrum of the object specific to the task in hand. The pupil function is thus engineered in such a fashion that the modulation transfer function (MTF) is maximized only in these selected spatial frequencies. We extract these high energy spatial frequencies using PCA method. The advantage of our approach is illustrated using an amplitude modulation and a phase modulation example. In these...

Generation expansion planning of stand-alone micro-power systems under uncertainty using advanced planning methodology

    Abstract
In this paper a strategic planning framework for selecting the best configuration and capacity of different power generating technologies including renewable energy resources in stand-alone micro-power systems is proposed. The proposed framework is composed of three decision making techniques to identify the most feasible and efficient plans according to attributes and uncertain parameters in the planning environment. The framework considers the robustness and risk analysis of different plans exposed to uncertainties in the planning environment and selects the configurations that meet the objectives with the least risk exposure. The proposed methodology is implemented as a case study of a...

Designing a model of fuzzy TOPSIS in multiple criteria decision making

    Abstract
Decision making is the process of finding the best option among the feasible alternatives. In classical multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods, the ratings and the weights of the criteria are known precisely. Due to vagueness of the decision data, the crisp data are inadequate for real-life situations. Since human judgments including preferences are often vague and cannot be expressed by exact numerical values, the application of fuzzy concepts in decision making is deemed to be relevant. We design a model of TOPSIS for the fuzzy environment with the introduction of appropriate negations for obtaining ideal solutions. Here, we apply a new measurement of fuzzy distance value with a...

    Abstract
Distributed Generation (DG) can help in reducing the cost of electricity to the customer, relieve network congestion, provide environmentally friendly energy close to load centers as well as promote system technical characteristics such as loss reduction, voltage profile enhancement, reserve mitigation and many other factors. Furthermore, its capacity is also scalable and it can provide voltage support at distribution level. The planning studies include penetration level and placement evaluation which are influenced directly by DG type. Most of the previous publications in this field chose one or two preferred parameter as basic objective and implement the optimizations in systems. But due...
