    Air pollution trends in Tehran and their anthropogenic drivers

    Abstract
    An assessment of trends in main air pollutant concentrations (including CO, SO2, NO2, O3, PM2.5, and Asbestos) is conducted for the years 2005–2016 for the city of Tehran, Iran. The focus has been on the contribution of anthropogenic emissions to the observed trend, particularly the role of related mitigation plans implemented in the period of interest. A significant decreasing trend (about 50%) was observed in CO and SO2 concentrations during the considered time interval, which was explained by improvement plans in fuel quality and vehicle emission standards.     One effective way to reduce air pollution created by automobiles is to tax/toll the unfavorable characteristics of the automobiles. This study is an extension of the current literature on taxing visible and measurable aspects of automobile ownership and use, namely engine size, age, fuel used, and technology level.     Network pricing is an effective transportation demand management scheme to reduce traffic and control air pollution, particularly in CBDs. In this study, congested area cordon entry and Park-and-Ride (P/R) facility use are priced for automobiles. Increase in these prices may reduce private auto demand by impelling some of the auto passengers to use public transport from the origin of their trips, or encouraging them to park their cars at the P/R facilities and use buses, or pay the entrance fee and drive inside the cordon.     ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) can be applied to many fields. In this paper we present an ITS system for respiratory patients based on finding cleaner paths. In this system the information related to air pollution of different sections of the city is received from center of air-pollution information presentation and a path with least degree of air pollution is suggested.     The need for the control of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) has led engineers to modify wastewater aeration tank systems. In this research, air recirculation has been investigated as a possible VOC control strategy for these systems. A steady-state mathematical model of VOC emission rates has been developed from the fundamentals of VOC convection, volatilization and biodegradation. This study examines daily Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) between 2001 and 2015 over northwestern Iran, which encompasses LU.
