, Article Journal of Advanced Science, Engineering and Medicine ; 2013, Vol. 5, pp. 1-10 Babahosseini, H. (Hesam) ; Mahboobi, Seyed Hanif ; Meghdari, Ali ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is a capable tool to manipulate nanoparticles by exerting pushing force on the nanoparticles located on the substrate. In reality, the substrate cannot be considered as a smooth surface particularly at the nanoscale. Hence, the particle may encounter a step on the substrate during a manipulation. In this study, dynamics of the nanoparticle on a stepped substrate and critical pushing force in the manipulation are investigated. There are two possible dynamic modes that may happen in the manipulation on the stepped substrate. In one mode, the nanoparticle may slide on the step edge and then climb up to the step which is a desired mode. Another possible mode is...

Probabilistic Evaluation of Ridge Isolation as an Inventive Method for Mitigating the Displacement of Isolated Buildings under all Possible Hazards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoli, Sina (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the probabilistic benefit of the implementation of second isolation layer in isolated structures to both the structure and the constructor. The innovation of this research is in the utilization of a seemingly useless part of the structure, which is the ridge, for mitigating the structure’s displacement. For this purpose, a five-story residential structure and its ridge have been isolated and modeled as an MDOF system with two degree of freedom in MATLAB software and the benefits due to the reduction in displacement and acceleration has been calculated. The results indicate 40 percent reduction in the main structure’s displacement and a benefit...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoli, Parto (Author) ; Aslani, Shirin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, the advent of online platforms as an intermediary tool has provided an opportunity for service providers and manufacturers to offer their services/products to consumers. Ride-hailing platforms are an example of these businesses where independent drivers and passengers are matched via an online platform. One of the most significant challenges faced by these companies is the emergence of strategic behaviors on both the demand and the supply side, which might affect the performance and profitability of the platform. In this thesis, we study the strategic behavior of drivers and its impact on their performance, using the data of one of the largest ride-hailing companies in Iran. We use...

Chatter Phenomena Prediction in Two-dimensional Milling Process from Chip Formation by Using Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoli, Meysam (Author) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chattering in cutting process is one of the destructive phenomena in machining, which results in ripple of workpiece surfaces. In this phenomenon, the displacement of the tool tip moves towards instability and the tool vibration continues. Eventually, the tool jumps or breaks out with relatively large shear forces, which leads to a reduction in the rate of production and machining. Since machining processes are very widespread, phenomenological studies of chatter have progressed in the field of modeling and empirical experiments. Research in the field of modeling is mainly intended to examine the dynamics of the tool in two ways: analytic and finite element. In these methods, there are...

    Abstract
Bilateral PPG signals have been used for comparative study of two groups of healthy (free from any cardiovascular risk factors) and diabetic (as cardiovascular disease risk group) subjects in the age-matched range 40-50 years. The peripheral blood pulsations were recorded simultaneously from right and left index fingers for 90 s. Pulses have been modeled with the ARX440 model in the interval of 300 sample points with 100 sample points overlap between segments. Model parameters of three segments based on the highest fitness (higher than 80%) of modeled segments were retained for each subject. Subsequently, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the parameters of retained segments...

VoIP users’ Quality of Experience (QoE)Evaluation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hesam Mohseni, Abdorreza (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quality of Experience (QoE) indicates the overall quality of one service such as Voice over IP (VoIP) from users' point of view by considering several systems, human, and contextual factors. QoE measurement and prediction are more challenging than Quality of Service (QoS) which is only related to network parameters. There exist various objective and subjective methods for QoE prediction. This research investigates various features affecting QoE by proposing a comprehensive subjective evaluation by employing a large number of users. We show that many unconsidered factors including speaker specifications and signal properties, such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), can affect QoE so that the SNR...

    Abstract
Quality of Experience (QoE) measures the overall quality of a service from users’ point of view by considering several system, human, and contextual factors. There exist various objective and subjective methods for QoE prediction. Although the subjective approach is more expensive and challenging than the objective approach, QoE’s level can be more accurately determined by a subjective test. This paper investigates various features affecting QoE by proposing a comprehensive subjective evaluation. First, we show that many unconsidered factors can significantly affect QoE. We have generated voice samples featuring different values for novel factors related to the speaker, signal, and network....

Goal Directed Programming for Determining Process Efficiency Using Data Envelopment Analysis

    , Article Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms in Operations Research ; 2013 , Pages 1-17 ; 22142487 (ISSN) Tavassoli, M ; Adldoost, H ; Saen, R. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2013
    Abstract
There are numerous measurement methods for process performance control. One of which, widely used in quality control programs, is process capability (Cp) index. The advantage of this index is due to the high amount of information extracted from it. Since Cpis independent from a particular measurement unit it can be used to compare several quite different processes. While the relative efficiency of the process performance based on the Cpfor a period is satisfying, the process may lose efficiency in the next period for variety of reasons and could not keep up with the standard limits. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach for measuring the relative efficiency of peer...

    Abstract
V2O5/SiO2 catalyst utilized to oxidize the SO2 to SO3 species in the presence of oxygen mainly for producing sulfuric acid. For this catalyst, the active phase was a mixture of vanadium pentoxide and basic sulfate/pyrosulfate material. This active phase at the reaction temperature behaved as a liquid filling up the pores of the silica support. On the other hand, amounts of the SO3 and V5+ species in the catalyst necessarily varied with the concentration of the feed material and temperature rendering complexity to the kinetics of the SO2 oxidation reaction. In the current research, the catalyst preparation with different amounts of such materials was undertaken. Purified Diatomaceous earth of...

Analysis of Kinematic Synergies in Description of Cerebral Palsy Patients' Gait

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoli, Shahab (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Narimani, Roya (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) is one the most prevalent neuromusculoskeletal disease amongst children. Damage in the central nervous system (CNS) causes defective growth of the musculoskeletal system during infancy to maturity, then leading to impairment of selective motor control (SMC), spasticity and sometimes contracture of musculotendinous junction. Treatment of Cerebral Palsy is limited to reduce complications. Medical procedures such as neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgeries or rehabilitation used as a common operation. Recently studies in the field of synergy directed a new path to understanding of human motor control complexity besides identification of functionality of musculoskeletal...

We have illustrated our study with some major logic applications of SET. The main goal of this thesis is to develop simulation software for single electron circuits, comparable with the well-known commercial software “SIMON”, which can provide steady-state and transient analysis of the...

Effect of recycle gas composition of the performance of Fischer-Tropsch catalyst

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 458-468 ; 10916466 (ISSN) Rohani, A. A ; Khorashe, F ; Safekordi, A. A ; Tavassoli, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of CO2 and CH4 on the performance and selectivity of Co-Ru/Al2O3 catalyst is investigated by injection of these gases (0-20 vol.% of feed) to the feed stream. The effect of temperature and feed flow rate are also inspected. The results show that low amounts of CO2 in the feed stream do not change the catalyst activity, but increasing the amount of CO2 (more than 10 vol.%), causes the CO conversion to decrease and the selectivity of heavy components to increase. Methane acts as an inert gas and does not affect the catalyst performance. Increasing feed flow rate has a negative effect on both CO conversion and heavy component selectivity. By raising the temperature,...
