An artificial multi-channel model for generating abnormal electrocardiographic rhythms

    , Article Computers in Cardiology 2008, CAR, Bologna, 14 September 2008 through 17 September 2008 ; Volume 35 , 2008 , Pages 773-776 ; 02766574 (ISSN); 1424437067 (ISBN); 9781424437061 (ISBN) Clifford, G. D ; Nemati, S ; Sameni, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present generalizations of our previously published artificial models for generating multi-channel ECG so that the simulation of abnormal rhythms is possible. Using a three-dimensional vectorcardiogram (VCG) formulation, we generate the normal cardiac dipole for a patient using a sum of Gaussian kernels, fitted to real VCG recordings. Abnormal beats are then specified either as new dipoles, or as perturbations of the existing dipole. Switching between normal and abnormal beat types is achieved using a hidden Markov model (HMM). Probability transitions can be learned from real data or modeled by coupling to heart rate and sympathovagal balance. Natural morphology changes form beat-to-beat...

Fetal R-wave detection from multichannel abdominal ECG recordings in low SNR

, Article Proceedings of the 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society: Engineering the Future of Biomedicine, EMBC 2009, 2 September 2009 through 6 September 2009, Minneapolis, MN ; 2009 , Pages 344-347 ; 9781424432967 (ISBN) Kharabian, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sameni, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Abdominal recordings of fetal ECG (fECG) have lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as compared with invasive procedures. In this paper we have combined two previously proposed methods, one for extracting fECG, called πCA and the other, a transformation based on Hilbert transform to enhance the R-peaks. The combination of these methods seems to work well in situations of noisy data and fetal repositioning. Also a comparison is done by using ICA in order to extract the fetal signals. Performance of both methods is studied separately. Results show that applying the transformation on the components extracted with the use of πCA (after maternal ECG cancellation), had a very good performance. Also,...

ECG denoising using parameters of ECG dynamical model as the states of an extended Kalman filter

    Abstract
In this paper an efficient Altering procedure based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) has been proposed. The method is based on a modified nonlinear dynamic model, previously introduced for the generation of synthetic ECG signals. We have suggested simple dynamics as the governing equations for the model parameters. Since we have not any observation for these new state variables, they are considered as hidden states. Quantitative evaluation of the proposed algorithm on the MIT-BIH signals shows that an average SNR improvement of 12 dB is achieved for a signal of -5 dB. The results show improved output SNRs compared to the EKF outputs in the absence of these new dynamics. © 2007 IEEE

Sequential blind source extraction for quasi-periodic signals with time-varying period

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 56, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 646-655 ; 00189294 (ISSN) Tsalaile, T ; Sameni, R ; Sanei, S ; Jutten, C ; Chambers, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A novel second-order-statistics-based sequential blind extraction algorithm for blind extraction of quasi-periodic signals, with time-varying period, is introduced in this paper. Source extraction is performed by sequentially converging to a solution that effectively diagonalizes autocorrelation matrices at lags corresponding to the time-varying period, which thereby explicitly exploits a key statistical nonstationary characteristic of the desired source. The algorithm is shown to have fast convergence and yields significant improvement in signal-to-interference ratio as compared to when the algorithm assumes a fixed period. The algorithm is further evaluated on the problem of separation of...

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel service that uses audio watermarking for covert communication through telephone system is presented. This system is suitable for ISDN and PSIN networks and it can be modified for using in mobile systems. We use a Direct sequence spread spectrum algorithem with perceptual modeling of HAS for embedding watermark into the audio or speed signals. The watermark is robust against telephone channel attacks such as AWGN , Low pass filtering, D/A-A/D conversion, Downsampling down to 64 slips and A-Law or μ-Law conversion. This system is also robust against audio format conversion such as wave (windows PCM) format to mp3 (down o 64 kbps compression. © 2006 IEEE

MR artifact reduction in the simultaneous acquisition of EEG and fMRI of epileptic patients

    , Article 16th European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO 2008, Lausanne, 25 August 2008 through 29 August 2008 ; 2008 ; 22195491 (ISSN) Amini, L ; Sameni, R ; Jutten, C ; Hossein Zadeh, G. A ; Soltanian Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Integrating high spatial resolution of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and high temporal resolution of electroencephalogram (EEG) is promising in simultaneous EEG and fMRI analysis, especially for epileptic patients. The EEG recorded inside an MR scanner is interfered with MR artifacts. In this article, we propose new artifact reduction approaches and compare them with the conventional artifact reduction methods. Our proposed approaches are based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD) and median filtering. The proposed methods are applied on experimental simultaneous EEG and fMRI recordings of an epileptic patient. The results show significant improvement over...
