Complexity of Density Dependencies of Thermal- and Internal- Pressure Compared to that of Total Pressure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sajjadi, Hashem (Author) ; Parsafar, Gholamabbas (Supervisor) ; Goharshadi, Elaheh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A simple equation of state (EoS) has recently been introduced (J. Phys. Chem. B 2009, 113, 11977–11987) as (Z-1) v^2=e+f⁄ρ+gρ^2, where Z≡pv⁄RT is the compressibility factor, v=1⁄ρ is molar volume, and e, f, and g are temperature dependent parameters. This EoS has been found to be accurate for all types of nano- and bulk- solids and bulk fluids, in the entire temperature and pressure ranges for which experimental data are reported, except for the isotherms within the critical region.
The aim of this work is to investigate the validity of a 3-term expression similar to the mentioned EoS for both thermal and internal contributions to the compressibility factor, separately. Such...

Design and Prototyping of an Attitude Control System for Rigid Bodies

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saadat, Mohsen (Author) ; Jalali, Mir Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Attitude control of rigid bodies is a complicated but attractive problem in dynamics. One of its main practical applications is in satellite attitude control and specifically in space telescope orientation control. Using fuel thrusters is not only expensive in most cases, but also it cannot be considered as an appropriate solution from reliability and economic aspects in long-term applications such as space telescopes and telecommunication satellites. On the other hand, magnetic torquers and momentum wheels cannot be utilized for rapid and large maneuvers due to their inability in generating large torques, which are needed in such maneuvers. As a result, another type of attitude control...

Design and Manufacturing of Intelligent Speed Hump

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rashedi, Mohammad (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of using speed humps is to reduce the velocity of cars to allowable value. Reducing the speed more than necessary before arriving at the hump, causes losing kinetic energy whose compensation needs consuming more fuel. In fact, the total fuel consumption of vehicles is noticeable and it expresses the need for allowable speed definition to prevent wasting fuel. In this project, using different methods in engineering design and by defining allowable speed, an intelligent speed hump is designed and selected from different patterns which may remain protuberant or become like the road surface in level. The parts considered for this hump are selected simple to lower the cost of...

Modeling and Optimization of Different Powertrain Configurations for a Specific Electric Vehicle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farjam, Tahmoores (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years passenger cars have been known as the main source of air pollution in urban areas. Despite all the research and efforts in minimizing the fuel consumption and emissions of internal combustion engines (ICE), this is merely a temporary solution. The permanent solution to overcome these disavantages is the use of electric vehicles (EV). The main downside of using electric vehicles is their short driving range. Multi-speed transmissions can be adopted to overcome this problem. Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) and infinitely variable transmissions (IVT) have been proven to enhance fuel economy in ICE vehicles and a great deal of research is being conducted to maximize...

Fluctuations in the order of System Size in the Avalanche-Size Distribution of Sandpiles Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saadat, Elaheh (Author) ; Moghimi Araghi, Saman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the concept of Self-Organized Criticality was introduced in terms of BTW Sandpiles model, its major features have been known as broad power law distributions without any tuning parameters. In some selforganized critical systems like brain and neural networks, some evidences and experiments show a periodic or non-power law distribution of avalanches in addition to the power-law distributions of avalanches. In this thesis we try to observe the same phenomenon in the well-known SOC models, namely the BTW and Manna sandpile models. We have considered small lattice sizes with periodic boundary conditions and a small amount of dissipation. Within such conditions we observe a periodic-like...

Design and Fabrication of Weigh in Motion System for Railway Vehicles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourjoula, Mohammad (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Railroads should be well maintained for safe and efficient operation. The most important reason for the failure of railways is overload and asymmetric load on them. Also, the proper interval for repairs should be adjusted to fit the load crossed over. In order to carry out all these tasks, a constant observation of the weight on the rails must take place. Current dynamic weighing systems are costly. In addition, the installation of these systems is time-consuming and causes permanent damage to the rails. On the other hand, some of the cheaper models of weighing systems require full stop and static weighing, which practically does not work at all, especially on busy rails due to delays. The...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari, Mahdi (Author) ; Saadat Foomani, Mahmood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the problems in vessels is the marine oscillations that occur due to the collision of sea waves with the vessel. These oscillations in small yachts can cause passengers to seasick upside down and overturn objects in the boat, or in industrial ships can cause problems in the operation of cranes on vessel, and in military vessels can cause errors in targeting weapons and radar systems. The purpose of this research is to design and simulate a robotic compensating table that can actively compensate the vessel fluctuations by using control algorithms in three directions of Roll, Pitch and Heave and create a level that can be used in Medium-sized boats were used to eliminate harmful...
