    Abstract
In present research work, methods of preparing ion exchange membranes, especially anion exchange membranes, were studied and chemical modification of polysulfone was chosen as a safe and economical method for preparing anion exchange membranes. Membranes were produced by mixing and amination of the chloromethylated and normal polysulfone (40-100% wt). Morphology and chemical structure of membranes were investigated by SEM images and FTIR spectroscopy. The ionic conductivity, ion exchange capacity and water content of samples were measured. The...

Study of Physical Properties of Poly(1,3 Butadiene-co-Acrylic acid-co-Acrylonitrile) Terpolymer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tati, Ali (Author) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Butadiene is one of the most widely used materials in the Iran polymer industry. In order to use this material in the first step, the inhibitor must be separated. Consequently, at the start of the project, the separation of Tert butylcatechol inhibitors from butadiene was studied by the adsorption process on active alumina. The results of the condensed butadiene gas chromatography–mass spectrometry test indicate that, by using the active alumina as an adsorbent, the tert butylcatechol will be removed completely. In the next step, 1,3 butadiene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid acid terpolymer, which one of its applications is manufacturing of artificial teeth, was synthesized by emulsion...

    Abstract
Isopropanol purifying denotes dehydration of it to utilize in industries become important these days. Conventional process like distillation could not produce this product in high purity. Using membrane-based process, pervaporation, to dehydrate Isopropanol and other organic compound has been noticed in the last years. Among all type of membranes to dehydrate alcohols, poly (vinyl alcohol) is more effective due to its high hydrophilic characteristic. But it swallows in aqueous solutions and decrease its selectivity. To enhance structural and separation properties Chitosan, TiO2 and glurataldehyde added to polymeric membranes. Nine membranes have been made in this study that can be grouped in...

Design and Preparation of Gas sensor for Binary Gas Mixtures on the Base of Polymeric Membranes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabani, Ehsan (Author) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are different types of sensors for measuring the concentration of gases that usually have high prices because of their complicated method of production. We can produce much cheaper sensors in special conditions by using polymer membranes. Different gases can be separated by using appropriate polymer membranes and the difference between diffusion rate of these gases is the basis of the separation method and gases pass through the membrane with different flow rates in the specific entrance pressure. The flow rate of total gas which flows will be different for a binary gaseous mixture at specific temperature and pressure with different concentrations because the flow rate is relative to...

Ultrasonic flowmeters that are the most useful ones of them consist of three elements made of piezoelectric, impedance matching layer and backing material. In this study, on the contrary to former backing materials which usually use of titanium, tungsten, and aluminum oxide as a composite Filler, for the first time, tungsten oxide is used. In order to do this, composite samples were built of tungsten...

The membrane was fabricated by interfacial polymerization on the modified polysulfone substrate. To improve the efficiency of nitrate removal, several surface and bulk modifiers were used. As modified with LiCl and PVP polymer, the substrate matrix was modified to have the highest porosity to reduce the mass transfer resistance and the much surface area to form a polyamide layer on it. The polyamide layer was then synthesized by interfacial polymerization using a blend of MPD and PIP in different ratios (1: 1 optimum ratio) in reaction with TMC (optimum concentration...

Forward Osmosis in High Saline Water Desalination

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadipuya, Salman (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to population growth, per capita change and heterogeneous distribution of water resources, forecasts demonstrate that more than 66% of the world's population will experience water scarcity by 2025. The major concern of desalination is their management of brine, with concentrations and their associated components more than twice the input concentration. Also, when extracting oil, per 1 oil barrel, about 7 to 10 barrels of high saline water are produced. One of the most common methods for disposing of brine is direct discharge into the environment, which, due to its destructive effects, creates serious threats to marine ecosystems. Therefore, it is necessary to desalting these high saline...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mollataheri, Mehdi (Author) ; Mohammadi, Ali Asghar (Supervisor) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lately, some investigators of polymer engineering group are working to do continuous polymer solution casting process, rather than batch process for flat sheet membrane production. For this, they use a doctor blade system but, they faced some problems during coating process. From experimental observations of the studied system, some inappropriate vorticities were seen. That’s why the system forms a non-uniform film of the solution. Air bubbling occurs at system exit which is undesirable as well. In this study simulation and optimization has been done for forming thin film in doctor blade system. COMSOL Multiphysics 4.3b was used in purpose of simulating which works on numerical finite...
