, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keihani Hakavani, Ali (Author) ; Ghotbi, Cyrous (Supervisor) ; Jafari Behbahani, Taraneh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the main problems associated with the oil production is asphaltene precipitate in the reservoirs. In order to plan for the EOR methods, production scenario, and selection of completion technology, it is necessary to study the initiation of asphaltene precipitation called onset. Since the experimental methods is not only is so expensive and time consuming, the required materials are not available. Consequently, modeling approaches as new methods are proper substitutes for laboratory procedure. These methods need less costs and time and higher accuracy compared to the experimental investigations which are the advantages of these methods. Computational operations for onset determination...

Estimating Particulate Matter (PM10) Concentration using Satellite data and Meteorological data from Synoptic Stations and WRF in Tehran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghotbi, Saba (Author) ; Arhami, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Detetrmination of particulate matter (PM), as one of the most important pollutants in big cities, requires extensive system of monitoring stations. Remotely sensed atmospheric data due to their large spatial coverage and frequent observations are emerging as an important addition to conventional ground based atmospheric monitoring. In this regards this study presents an approach to analyze the relationship between PM10 (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) and the satellite product of aresol optical depth (AOD), which is the measurement of the extinction of light due to interferences with particulate matter. In the current study AOD is observed by Moderate Resolution Imaging...

Integrated Intelligent Control Design of Azar Oil Field

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jamali, Hamid (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Intelligent control or management of well or reservoir is a method which is used in order to optimize the production for increasing recovery factor so that the minimum damage or reduction of pressure occurs during production lifetime. Azar oilfield has 17 wells and the production from this field isn't started. Thereupon designing a suitable well completion model and a control algorithm to optimize the production for the first two years of production is necessary and indispensable. For this purpose, by collecting basic information and their analysis (for example pressure, temperature, production rate, the type and amount of produced fluids), designing of downhole installations and modeling...

A general expression for the ordered-packed volume fraction of hard spheres of different diameters

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 41, Issue 5 , 2002 , Pages 1122-1128 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Ghotbi, C ; Vera, J. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2002
    Abstract
An expression is proposed to evaluate the ordered-packed volume fraction of hard spheres of unequal diameters in multicomponent mixtures. This value can be used with different mixing rules and with any one-component hard-sphere equation of state (EOS) meeting the correct close-packed limit. It is shown that the new method improves the results produced by conventional mixing rules for the individual radial distribution functions (RDFs) at contact value of hard-sphere mixtures. Particular attention is given to the case of the large diameter ratio especially when the larger spheres are at low concentration. Based on the observation that, in a binary mixture, the value of the RDF at contact...

    Abstract
The predictions of the pair radial distribution function (RDF) at contact value, compressibility factor, and chemical potentials for binary and ternary hard-sphere mixtures obtained with the Barrio-Solana, the Santos et al., and the generalized Lebowitz mixing rules are compared using the Carnahan-Starling, Kolafa, and Khoshkbarchi-Vera one-component hard-sphere EOS. An expression for the pair RDF at contact value for Barrio-Solana mixing rule and the expressions for the chemical potentials in multicomponent hard-sphere fluids are derived. As a general rule, the equations of state obtained based on the generalized Lebowitz mixing rule predict better the pair RDF at contact value simulated...

Extension to mixtures of two robust hard-sphere equations of state satisfying the ordered close-packed limit

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2001 , Pages 678-686 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Ghotbi, C ; Vera, J. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
Two new hard-sphere EOS are proposed and tested using the same attractive potential terms used by the SAFT EOS. Generalized expressions for the pair RDF at contact value, the compressibility factor, and the excess chemical potentials have been derived. Extension to mixtures is tested using three mixing rules for multicomponent hard-sphere fluids. The proposed EOS combined with the Santos et al. and the Barrio-Solana mixing rules reproduced the compressibility factors and the excess chemical potentials more accurately than the Boublik-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland (BMCSL) EOS. However the pair RDF at contact value had larger deviations than those obtained with the BMCSL EOS. The...

Optimal Control of a Stage Structured Prey-Predator Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fadaie Ghotbi, Javad (Author) ; Hessaraki, Mahmmod (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A prey-predator fishery model with stage structure for prey is discusing in this thises. The adult preyand predator populations are harvested in the proposed system. The dynamic behavior of the model system is discussed. It is observed that singularity induced bifurcation phenomena is appeared when variation of the economic interest of harvesting is taken into account. We have incorporated state feedback controller to stabilize the model system in the case of positive economic interest. Fishing effort used to harvest the adult prey and predator population is used as a control to develop a dynamic framework to investigate the optimal utilization of the resource. Simulation results show that the...

An Investigation of Signal Processing Techniques for Monitoring of the Heart Abnormalities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghotbi Ravandi, Amir (Author) ; Ghorshi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we have investigated and improved the signal processing techniques which are used for monitoring the heart abnormalities in terms of ECG (ElectroCardioGram) signals in order to detect heart attacks before they occur. De-noising ECG signals are one of the most important research topics in computer and electrical engineering fields. There are many different algorithms for de-noising signals in various domains. It usually is needed to propose a suitable algorithm for each specific system. In some cases instead of developing a new algorithm, we could modify the available ones for de-noising in our system. ECG signals are output from an electrocardiograph which measures electrical...

Estimating urban ground-level PM10 using MODIS 3km AOD product and meteorological parameters from WRF model

    , Article Atmospheric Environment ; Volume 141 , 2016 , Pages 333-346 ; 13522310 (ISSN) Ghotbi, S ; Sotoudeheian, S ; Arhami, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Satellite remote sensing products of AOD from MODIS along with appropriate meteorological parameters were used to develop statistical models and estimate ground-level PM10. Most of previous studies obtained meteorological data from synoptic weather stations, with rather sparse spatial distribution, and used it along with 10 km AOD product to develop statistical models, applicable for PM variations in regional scale (resolution of ≥10 km). In the current study, meteorological parameters were simulated with 3 km resolution using WRF model and used along with the rather new 3 km AOD product (launched in 2014). The resulting PM statistical models were assessed for a polluted and largely variable...

Improving Temperature Stability of Drilling Fluids Polymers Using Nano Particles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Halali, Mohamad Amin (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Water base drilling fluids are the most common drilling fluids in oil and gas operations and biopolymers are the requisite additives used in such kind of fluids frequently. Unfortunately, at harsh conditions of HPHT the polymers undergo thermal degradation which cause serious loss in fluid rheological and filtration properties. Accordingly, this will induce operational pitfalls and tremendous cost. The power of economy along with environmental regulations force us to search for reasonable chemically benign additives to fulfill this need. Nanoparticles are the most promising additives proposed in this study to address this challenge. Regarding their unique exclusive properties, they are able...

    , Article International Journal of Thermophysics ; Volume 31, Issue 4-5 , May , 2010 , Pages 852-859 ; 0195928X (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, the values of the surface tension for a number of single aqueous electrolyte solutions were measured at various temperatures and electrolyte concentrations using the well-known and computer-aided pendant-drop method. In order to conduct the experimental measurements, a high-pressure IFT-700 apparatus, equipped with a view cell and a data acquisition system, was used. The systems studied in this study were aqueous solutions of KCl, NaCl, CaCl 2, and Na 2SO 4. The pooled standard deviation and the confidence limit of the surface-tension data for a 95 % confidence level were determined to be 0.17mN · m -1 and σ̄ ± 0.19, respectively. It should be noted that while the surface...

Developing a new model for the determination of petroleum fraction PC-SAFT parameters to model reservoir fluids

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 412 , 2016 , Pages 145-157 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Hosseinifar, P ; Assareh, M ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
In this work, PC-SAFT, an equation of state based on perturbation theory, is applied to predict the reservoir fluids phase behavior. PC-SAFT parameters for pure components have previously been assessed, but they cannot be determined for petroleum fractions with unspecified components and composition. In order to remove this difficulty and making use of PC-SAFT model in the reservoir fluids simulations, a new approach is studied which leads to appearing generalized correlations for the estimation of PC-SAFT parameters for petroleum cuts and plus fractions using only their molecular weight and specific gravity, without the essential need for the characterization of petroleum fractions in...

Application of the MSA-based models in correlating the surface tension for single and mixed electrolyte solutions

    , Article Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics ; Volume 41, Issue 11 , 2009 , Pages 1264-1271 ; 00219614 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Experimental values for surface tension of single and mixed electrolyte solutions were correlated using the models based on the perturbation theory. The Mean Spherical Approximation (MSA) model, coupled with the Ghotbi-Vera (GV) and the Mansoori et al. (BMCSL) equations of state, were used to correlate the experimental values of the surface tension. The results showed that the models can favourably correlate the experimental values for single electrolyte solutions. However, it was observed that the GV-MSA model can more accurately predict the surface tension for single electrolytes, especially at higher concentrations. Two different expressions for concentration dependency of cation hydrated...

Investigation of the minimum miscibility pressure for injection of two different gases into two Iranian oil reservoirs: experimental and theory

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 95, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 1014-1020 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Moosazadeh, M ; Keshavarzi, B ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-Liss Inc  2017
    Abstract
The results of the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) determination for miscible injection of CO2 and an associated gas of one of Iranian gas reservoirs into two different oil samples using a slim tube device are presented. For an effective determination of the MMP cell-to-cell slim tube simulation was performed for each case before performing the slim tube experiment and the results were used to determine the pressure intervals in the slim tube experiment. A comparison between the measured MMP values from the slim tube experiments and those calculated by cell-to-cell simulation revealed that the cell-to-cell simulation can be a substitute to slim tube test in cases where time is a primary...

Design & Manufacture of IGF/DGF Plant in Semi Industrial Scale for Wastewater Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hemmati, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increasing demand for energy forced to production of oil as one of the main sources of energy. Along with the increase in oil production, the proportion of water produced with oil is increasing relative to the oil produced. On the other hand, environmental restrictions for the discharge of industrial effluents into the environment are becoming more and more stringent every day. Before discharging the effluent into the environment, petroleum must be removed. The complexity of these issues demonstrates the need to develop new technologies and improve the efficiency of existing technologies. Gas flotation are among the technologies adopted in the field that have been used throughout the...

Effect of Public Transportation on Air Pollution in Tehran: the Case of Metro Network Expansion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghotbi, Mohammad Iman (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Openings and development of subway system have occurred since 1998 in Tehran, and 115 stations have been constructed from then until 2019. This could have various effects on urban characteristics and passenger behaviors, which air pollution could be one of the consequences. In this research, we want to investigate it`s effect on Tehran air pollution as well as heterogenous effects on different distances. For this, we use air pollution data of monitoring stations and meteorological data as well as location and construction time of metro stations. We use difference in difference and OLS regressions to estimate these causal effects. We see that air pollution has been decreased 2-3% as a result...

Correlation of the mean ionic activity coefficients in 1:1 electrolyte solutions using the GV-MSA model

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Technology ; Volume 27, Issue 2 , 2003 , Pages 269-278 ; 03601307 (ISSN) Ghotbi, C ; Taghikhani, V ; Azimi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
The Ghotbi-Vera hard sphere equation of state as the reference system, coupled with the mean spherical approximation, (GV-MSA), has been used to accurately correlate the mean ionic activity coefficients of aqueous solutions of single 1:1 electrolytes. The new equation of state considers the ions to be hard spheres in Kelvin tetrakaidekahedron cells. The mean ionic activity coefficients of the electrolytes can be correlated with constant diameter of anions, equal to the crystallographic Pauling diameter and with a concentration dependent relation for the cations. In comparison to their crystallographic Pauling diameters, the new model for the mean ionic activity coefficient produces realistic...

Accurate liquid-volume calculations for pure polar compounds using a volume-translated Peng-Robinson equation of state

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 6, Issue 5 , 2000 , Pages 115-124 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Ghotbi, C ; Behzadi, B ; Feyzi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2000
    Abstract
In this paper, the accuracy of Peng-Robinson equation of state for vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations has been studied for pure polar compounds and is compared with some other equations of state. This equation has then been modified using the volume-translation technique to improve saturated liquid-volume predictions in low to intermediate temperature and pressure ranges. Two different generalized forms of the translation parameter have been proposed in terms of critical compressibility factor and the reduced dipole moment multiplied by the acentric factor. The proposed generalized equations demonstrate more accurate results compared with the original Peng-Robinson and other selected...

Experimental Analysis of Immiscible Displacements of Heavy Oil in Heterogeneous Porous Media under Ultrasonic Effect

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kanani, Mojtaba (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the recent years, there has been an increasing attention toward usage of ultrasonic for enhanced oil recovery practices. But, thorough knowledge of active mechanisms and spreading and characterization of developed fingers during this practice is not available. From the other hand, due to limited amount of light oil fields, more attentions towards recovery from heavy oils is the need of the hour. Documents show that the big issues during the enhanced oil recovery from heavy crudes are high density of reservoir oil as well as poor development of fingers during injection due to high mobility ratios. In this study, results of ultrasound effect on the heavy oil recovery and its effect on the...

    Abstract
The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effect of fractures geometrical properties such as orientation, density, location, and networking on the conventional fire flooding (CFF) process performance through simulation analysis. Combustion parameters of a fractured low-permeable carbonate heavy oil reservoir in Iran called Kuh-E-Mond (KEM); applied for simulation study and simulator has been validated with KEM combustion tube experimental data. The validated model was modified to study CFF in 3D semi-scaled combustion cells. Simulation results confirmed that CFF is more feasible in the case of densely fractured reservoirs such as those in the Middle East
