    Abstract
Asian red ginseng was used for green reduction of chemically exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The reduction level and electrical conductivity of the ginseng-rGO sheets were comparable to those of hydrazine-rGO ones. Reduction by ginseng resulted in repairing the sp 2 graphitic structure of the rGO, while hydrazine-rGO showed more defects and/or smaller aromatic domains. The ginseng-rGO sheets presented a better stability against aggregation than the hydrazine-rGO ones in an aqueous suspension. Whilst the hydrophobic hydrazine-rGO films exhibited no toxicity against human neural stem cells (hNSCs), the hydrophilic GO and ginseng-rGO films (as more...

Characterisation of nanocrystalline sulfated titania modified with transition metals and aluminum as solid acids for esterification

    , Article Progress in Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism ; Volume 41, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 57-66 ; 14686783 (ISSN) Rahman Setayesh, S ; Abolhasani, E ; Ghasemi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Science Reviews 2000 Ltd  2016
    Abstract
TiO2, transition metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)- and aluminum-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel technique. The sulfated catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method with H2SO4 solution. The catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area measurement, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. The sulfate content of the metal-incorporated samples was considerably higher than for SO4 2-/TiO2. The metal doping brought about a considerable reduction in the extent of sulfate loss from the catalyst surface due to the wide dispersion on the surface. The SO4 2-/TiO2 and SO4 2-/M/TiO2...

    Abstract
Dolomite base refractories have advantages such as high refractoriness, potential to produce pure steel molten, high alkaline corrosion resistance, and economical for consumers. However, application of these refractories has been limited due to their high potential to hydration with atmosphere humidity. In this research work, the impact of ZrSiO4 nanoparticles addition on the physical, thermo-mechanical, mechanical, and microstructure of the dolomite base refractories is investigated. Also, XRD and SEM/EDX analyses were used for determining generated ceramic phases and microstructure evaluation, respectively. Up to 3 wt% ZrSiO4 nanoparticles were added to the compositions. Compositions fired...

    Abstract
In this research study, a comparative evaluation of the additional impact of nanometer-sized tetravalent oxides [Zirconia (ZrO2), Titania (TiO2), and Silica (SiO2)] on the properties and performance of Doloma-Magnesia (MgO-CaO) ceramic refractories, with an emphasis on their hydration resistance improvement, has been done. For this purpose, from 0 to 2.5 wt% ZrO2, TiO2, and SiO2 nanometer-sized particles have been added to the Doloma-Magnesia compositions. After formulation and mixing of the starting materials, the pressed samples (at 150 MPa) were tempered (at 250 °C for 12 h) and fired in a shuttle furnace (at 1650 °C for 3 h). The physical, mechanical, and thermo-mechanical properties of...

Performance prediction of twin-entry turbocharger turbines

, Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo 2002; Aircraft Engine, Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels, Combustion and Fuels, Education, Electric Power, Vehicular and Small Turbomachines, Amsterdam, 3 June 2002 through 6 June 2002 ; Volume 1 , 2002 , Pages 1087-1095 Ghasemi, S ; Shirani, E ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; The International Gas Turbine Institute ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
In this paper, the performance of the twin-entry radial flow turbine under steady state and partial admission conditions is modeled. The method, which is developed here, is based on one-dimensional performance prediction. In one-dimensional modeling, the flow properties are assumed constant on a plane normal to the flow direction. This assumption is in contrast with the flow at the rotor entry of a twin-entry turbine under partial admission condition. In this study the one-dimensional performance prediction method for single-entry turbine is modified to analyze the twin-entry turbine. In particular, the loss coefficients due to friction, clearance and blade loading, which are already...

    Abstract
Purpose - A numerical method is developed to capture the interaction of solid object with two-phase flow with high density ratios. The current computational tool would be the first step of accurate modeling of wave energy converters in which the immense energy of the ocean can be extracted at low cost. Design/methodology/approach - The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are discretized on a regular structured grid, and the two-step projection method along with multi-processing (OpenMP) is used to efficiently solve the flow equations. The level set and the immersed boundary methods are used to capture the free surface of a fluid and a solid object, respectively. The full...

American Society of Mechanical Engineers  2006
    Abstract
A new perspective suitable for understanding the details of nonlinear pumping (formation of traveling shocks) inside a pressurized cavity is constructed in this paper. Full compressible axisymmetric three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are used as the starting point to cover all complexities of the problem that exceedingly increase for particular ranges of Mach, Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. Then a very high-order numerical method is introduced to preserve the user-defined order of accuracy for practical simulations. For removal of spurious waves, higher-order compact filters are derived. All equations are marched in time using the classical Runge-Kutta algorithm which is appropriate...

    Abstract
Large-stencil schemes which their spectral properties are acceptable in the vicinity of ω = π are analyzed for the first time. A machine independent model for evaluating the efficiency of generalized time-marching finite-difference algorithms over periodic domains is developed. This model which is based on operation count reveals that for small values of Total Computational Cost(TCC), the previous low-order small-stencil schemes are more efficient while for moderate TCC, the efficiency of optimized large-stencil schemes abruptly increases. This important result is the motivation for developing optimized large-stencil schemes. The current schemes are successfully implemented in a full...

    Abstract
Recently, several high-order accurate methods have been developed for solving nonlinear equations governing in the high-frequency oscillations of a fluid column. If we assume that the value of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers are high enough then it is possible to neglect the effect of Stokes Layer and it has been previously shown that the calculated pressure profile obtained by solving three-dimensional axisymmetric compressible NS (Navier-Stokes) equations is in good agreement with one-dimensional adiabatic model of Ilinskii. For this particular flow which is the typical of engineering flows inside acoustical compressors, it is clear that high-resolution simulation of NS equations in higher...

Measurement of Gini Coefficients by Means of Household’s Special CPI in Iran(1984-2005)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Mojtaba (Author) ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gini coefficient is the most prevalent index for the measurement of inequality and is usually extracted by means of nominal variables based on income or expenditures of households. In this study we have extracted more accurate Gini coefficients. By using the raw data of Households Budget Survey (HBS) and STATA software, a special CPI for each household of the sample is extracted. Subsequently nominal expenditures are deflated by these special CPIs, and at last, Gini coefficients are extracted from real expenditures. Our findings indicate that in recent years, extracted Gini coefficients are remarkably higher than prevailing ones.

A new approach to study the Zeno effect for a macroscopic quantum system under frequent interactions with a harmonic environment

    , Article Scientific Reports ; Volume 9, Issue 1 , 2019 ; 20452322 (ISSN) Ghasemi, F ; Shafiee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Nature Publishing Group  2019
    Abstract
Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno behaviors of a two-level macroscopic quantum system in interaction with a harmonic environment are studied using the perturbation theory. The system-environment interactions are applied in a successive and step-by-step way. A new expression for the probability of surviving the macrosystem in its initial state, after the Nth interaction step, is derived through a different method of calculation. It is shown that multiple transitions between Zeno and anti-Zeno behaviors can be found in our approach. We have shown that in addition to the environmental parameters like the Ohmicity, the macroscopic trait of the system also has a notable effect on the decay rate Γ(τ)....

Dynamic Pricing by Considering Reference Price Effects in Competitive Environment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Zohre (Author) ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Taking into account the impact of advertising on the reference price, we propose an optimal pricing strategy for supply chains in competitive industries subject to reference price effect. Most of researches do not consider the competition among supply chains. An industry with two competing supply chains is considered. Each supply chain includes a manufacturer who sells his/her product via a retailer. There are two types of structures: integrated and decentralized (it is assumed that the relation in a chain is Manufacturer– Stackelberg). Each manufacturer offers wholesale price to his/her retailer anticipating the retailer’s order quantity. In addition, the retailers choose their retail...
