    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 1351-1360 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Shafiee, S ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Rastegar, M
    2013
    Abstract
Despite the economic and environmental advantages of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the increased utilization of PHEVs brings up new concerns for power distribution system decision makers. Impacts of PHEVs on distribution networks, although have been proven to be noticeable, have not been thoroughly investigated for future years. In this paper, a comprehensive model is proposed to study the PHEV impacts on residential distribution systems. In so doing, PHEV fundamental characteristics, i.e., PHEV battery capacity, PHEV state of charge (SOC), and PHEV energy consumption in daily trips, are accurately modeled. As some of these effective characteristics depend on vehicle owner's...

    , Article 2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2014 - Conference Proceedings ; 2014 , p. 199-203 ; ISBN: 9781480000000 Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The presence of different energy carriers as well as the advent of new multi-generation technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP) at homes necessitates designing an integrated model for optimal operation of such multi-carrier energy home. A residential energy hub model including a CHP and a Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is presented in this paper to show the multi-carrier energy system operation. In addition, this paper proposes an optimization-based formulation for PHEV charging control in the residential energy hub. The payment cost is minimized for the charge scheduling of PHEV through optimization of the residential energy hub operation in response to the...

    , Article 2012 11th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2012 - Conference Proceedings ; 2012 , p. 873-878 ; ISBN: 9781460000000 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Access to a computational tractable method for representing the system more realistically has always been an important issue in power system reliability assessment. The Post Optimal Analysis (POA), as a well recognized technique to attack a set of similar optimization problems, has been successfully used to assess the reliability of composite systems. This method exploits the similarity of the system states to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure without sacrificing the accuracy of the results. In this paper, the performance and practical feasibility of the POA technique for power system reliability evaluation is tested using the Iran power grid. The POA based approach is applicable...

    Abstract
Renewable energy resources, notably wind power, are expected to provide considerable portion of the world energy requirements in the near future. Many system operators around the world are challenged by the problems associated with integrating these intermittent resources into the grid. As one of the potential solutions, demand response (DR) is expected to play a major role for mitigating integration issues of intermittent renewable energy resources. In this context, this paper proposes a DR program which helps to integrate wind power by reshaping the load of the system. The DR program provides a framework to procure load reduction from DR resources in the wholesale energy market. The...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 27, issue. 1 , 2012 , p. 271-278 ; ISSN: 08858977 Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper approaches the topic of protection system reliability from an economic point of view by 1) designing an optimal modern protective relay based on a prescribed level of reliability subject to economic constraints and 2) determining optimal routine test intervals by balancing the cost of routine tests and losses due to relay failure. This paper proposes a method that enables the designer to optimally select hardware and software components of a digital protective relay to gain the highest possible overall reliability with a restricted budget. This design can be viewed as a reliability and redundancy allocation problem for which a new easy-to-implement algorithm is proposed. In...

New considerations in modern protection system quantitative reliability assessment

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 25, issue. 4 , 2010 , p. 2213-2222 ; ISSN: 8858977 Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Protective relay technologies have evolved from single-function electromechanical and static relays to modern multifunction digital relays over the past few years. Protection systems play a vital role in maintaining a desirable level of reliability in power systems. Thus, their own reliability should be evaluated and any cause of their malfunction should be fully comprehended. In this paper, a new reliability model is proposed that associates protection system failures to four main causes: 1) relay hardware, 2) relay software, 3) ancillary equipment, and 4) human error. In addition, this model can take other aspects of the protection system into consideration, such as human error during...

Impact of penalty-reward mechanism on the performance of electric distribution systems and regulator budget

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Vol. 4, issue. 7 , 2010 , p. 770-779 ; ISSN: 17518687 Mohammadnezhad-Shourkaei, H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
As a part of the ongoing debate about competition in the electricity industry, regulators are increasingly considering performance-based regulation (PBR) as an alternative to improve the service quality. The fundamental principle behind PBR is that good performance should lead to higher profits, and poor performance should result in lower profits. A penalty-reward structure (PRS) in a PBR mechanism can enhance utility performance to align utility interests with customer's interests. During the implementation of PBR, regulators should spend or receive money to reward good performed utilities or penalised poor performed utilities, respectively. A technique is proposed, in this study, to not...

, Article International Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering ; Vol. 4, Issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 193-199 Afshar, S ; Fotuhi firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Application of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) in a system results in a decrease in component failure rates and as such improvement in the system reliability. One of the major subjects of the RCM is focused on the Online and Offline Preventive Maintenance (OPM and FPM which together will be denoted by OFPM) of the components which repairing the component needs or doesn't need to stop the mission carrying out by it. The RCM is classified as a preventive maintenance policy and has significant contribution in practical applications. However, little research has been devoted to modeling the online and offline Preventive Maintenance. This research assumes that the component failure rate...

    Abstract
This paper presents a residential energy hub model for a smart multi-carrier energy home consisting of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), combined heat and power (CHP), solar panels, and electrical storage system (ESS). The energy hub inputs are electricity and natural gas that provide electrical and heat demands at the output ports. In this paper, an optimization-based program is proposed to determine the optimal operation mode of the energy hub, to manage the energy consumption of responsive appliances, to schedule charging/discharging of PHEV and the storage system, and to coordinate solar panels operation with household responsive demand in response to day-ahead time-varying tariffs...

Demand response scheduling by stochastic SCUC

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 1, Issue 1 , May , 2010 , Pages 89-98 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Parvania, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Considerable developments in the real-time telemetry of demand-side systems allow independent system operators (ISOs) to use reserves provided by demand response (DR) in ancillary service markets. Currently, many ISOs have designed programs to utilize the reserve provided by DR in electricity markets. This paper presents a stochastic model to schedule reserves provided by DR in the wholesale electricity markets. Demand-side reserve is supplied by demand response providers (DRPs), which have the responsibility of aggregating and managing customer responses. A mixed-integer representation of reserve provided by DRPs and its associated cost function are used in the proposed stochastic model....

A heuristic-based approach for reliability importance assessment of energy producers

    , Article Energy Policy ; Vol. 39, issue. 3 , 2011 , Pages 1562-1568 ; ISSN: 03014215 Akhavein, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reliability of energy supply is one of the most important issues of service quality. On one hand, customers usually have different expectations for service reliability and price. On the other hand, providing different level of reliability at load points is a challenge for system operators. In order to take reasonable decisions and obviate reliability implementation difficulties, market players need to know impacts of their assets on system and load-point reliabilities. One tool to specify reliability impacts of assets is the criticality or reliability importance measure by which system components can be ranked based on their effect on reliability. Conventional methods for determination of...

    Abstract
In distribution system planning studies, reliability evaluation is performed during optimization procedure to calculate the interruption cost, DISCO's income and to check the viability of constraints related to reliability indices. In each iteration of the optimization algorithm a special plan is evaluated that is different from other plans. So the configuration and specification of the network which is one of the input information for reliability evaluation is changing continuously that makes difficulties for this evaluation. To solve these difficulties, this paper presents a systematic method for reliability evaluation in distribution planning studies. The proposed approach can be...

Reliability evaluation of HV substations in the presence of Fault Current Limiter

    , Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future, 28 June 2009 through 2 July 2009 ; 28 June-2 July , 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Rahmati, I ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Short circuit current is one of the major threats for power system stability. Power system should have the ability to detect and clear these faults within a specified time. The protection system can clear the faults only if the interruption capability of the circuit breakers is higher than the fault level. Expansion of the grid and installation of new power on the scale that is envisaged will require practical solutions to a number of technical challenges. One of the technical challenges is fault level management as system expansion often results in increased fault levels beyond the design limits of the existing switchgears. Replacing the old equipments particularly circuit breakers with the...
